The nice thing about a mass-produced device like the iPad 2 model ... and ... a mass-distributed OS like iOS 8.1 ... is that if a person finds JUST ONE DEVICE (of that model) which works fine, that means that they ALL have that same capability.
THAT is the encouraging news that all users of the iPad 2 model have ... by not merely finding ONE but having the vast majority working fine.
But all we need for PROOF that it can work fine is just ONE.

Nov 17, 2014 8:22 AM in response to pacoKASby drc_,It's also encouraging that there is evidence that Apple had identified this is an issue and is prepping an update (8.1.1), a release date still as yet undetermined.
Solutions and Options:
So there are some solutions on this thread and in other places that you could try. If you choose not to tinker with your iPad then your other option is to wait it out for another update, not knowing when that will be, but it's still an option.

Nov 17, 2014 8:52 AM in response to Star Travelerby Maxipeg,....and we all know that sometimes there are variations of mass-produced devices where components (RAM, drives, screens and so on) have been supplied by different manufactures (because one single manufacturer simply may not meet the demand).
So, just one single iPad will not be sufficient. And the information about the device will have to be very specific.

Nov 17, 2014 1:08 PM in response to Maxipegby Blackapples,At last some hope.
I have tried all the fix' and more than once but it's still not the same. My Girlfriend and daughter i Pad 2's are on pre IOS8 and work just fine.
Now to keep in the ToR's (sigh). It has been suggested by some that you should occasionally re set your device back to factory settings. But? Will that not mean you will have to upload IOS 8? Therefore in the girls case risk their perfectly functional i Pad 2's turning into sluggish versions of their former selfs? A risk we are not prepared to take.
Thanks to all of you who keep this thread alive, looks like Apple are finally getting off their corporate a$$ and listening to their customers.
And to the naysayers, don't bother with a rude or condescending reply because I just can not be assed to read anything any more that starts with your names

Nov 17, 2014 1:21 PM in response to Blackapplesby Maxipeg,OK guys, 8.1.1. is out. There are several reports of users seeing improved performance of their iPads 2 running 8.1.1. You can read them yourself, e.g. at macrumorsdotcom.
I have installed it on my iPad 3. No dramatic improvement, Safari feels a bit faster, app switching perhaps too.... placebo effect? I haven't done any measurements... otherwise no major problems here, at least for now.

Nov 17, 2014 3:35 PM in response to gomatsby lesliefromstockton-on-tees,Installed 8.1.1 as a complete clean setup, no backup or restore so totally out of the box. I haven't installed anything at all that Apple doesn't install as default and I have to say that it is much better.
Speed tests are good over wifi, cut and paste is fixed, no lookups as yet, keyboard is responsive, just need to check some websites that were causing a problem. Router is an Apple Extreme latest firmware.
Only other actions were:
Turned off keyboard clicks
Cleared History and Website Data in Safari
Turn off and back on again
I was having all the usual problems.
It's just a shame it happened in the first place and that it took so long to fix it. Acknowledgement would have been appreciated.

What are all the 'usual' problems? I see no difference in iPhone4S or iPad2 with the update.

Nov 17, 2014 4:59 PM in response to lesliefromstockton-on-teesby Jwp721,Agree. Big difference with IOS 8.1.1. Keep denying that there were issues if you like, but for the rest of us 8.1.1 might be the best release yet.

Nov 17, 2014 6:31 PM in response to pacoKASby drc_,8.1.1 shows much improved performance on my iPad2. Still noticing a bit of jerky movements when some apps close, but so much smoother. Copy and paste, which was an issue yesterday is corrected, too.
I feel some sort of vindication and I didn't have to jump through hoops to trying a bunch of things to fix it.

Nov 17, 2014 7:40 PM in response to pacoKASby F J Poblam,I've posted elsewhere, but this thread is spot on topic. Our ol' iPad2 was running marginally well on 8. We don't use it for much—it's my wife's, and her main squeeze is the MBP, with the iPad mainly for travel and Kindle. Today I took it to 8.1.1. My bad. I understood 8.1.1 to address some of these iPad2 performance problems. Silly boy. Or doofus. Now performance is like someone walking through double-thick mud. Wi-Fi as slow as DSL? Heck we got Wi-Fi as slow as dialup—or maybe even pencil and paper. Slow as an IBM 360/20, for those who may know what I mean. iCloud Drive, previously enabled, is now entirely crippled. Apps that use it out-and-out crash—period. Including Pages, Sketchbook Pro, and mSecure. For iCloud Drive, I tried the (agonizingly slow) process of turning off and then back on, no luck. I tried signing out then back in. No luck. The iPad2 is essentially a gimp, unless my sweetie can be satisfied with Kindle, the weather, and a few other small meaningless apps.

Nov 17, 2014 8:25 PM in response to pacoKASby Dominic Dove Philip,Well, the new system really needs more space than before, you could use a tool to free up the space. The easiest way is searching a clean tool like Macgo iPhone Cleaner which could list all the junk files. Then, you could choose the obsoleting files to delete.
