Where can I find detailed directions to connect MB Air or iPhone 6 go ATV with no WLAN

I am trying to Airplay from my MacBook Air (Mid 2013), OSX 10.9.4 or my iPhone 6 to an Apple TV (newest version with newest software). I want to play movies purchased from Apple on TV in hotel room. I have the ability to connect via HDMI to TV. I have been able to successfully airplay from iPhone 6 to TV this way, but it doesn't work with any streaming other than a static screen on iPhone.

I tried to create an AdHoc WLAN on MacBook but ATV didn't see the network.

I am stumped. Help is appreciated.
