Aug 25, 2016 8:08 PM in response to KULIK121by Hcryer321,★HelpfulI Have the iPhone 6 128GB
My phone started having this problem today where I could not hear anyone
that was calling me or that I was calling it was super quiet and muffled. I could
hear them just fine on speaker phone or with a head set so I quickly realized the
problem was with the actual earpiece on the phone. I had never had this problem
before so I was worried my phone had met its end...
After reading this site and what everyone was saying I decided to inspect my
phone closer and used my fingernail to gently rub it across the ear piece, (if you're
like me your phone goes everywhere, in your pocket, on the ground, tables, chairs
purses... You name it, your phone has probably been there.) as I gently scratched
at the ear piece I noticed dirt or grime was coming out of the speaker onto the phone
I decided to grab a dry q-tip and rub the ear piece vigorously to which end the q-tip
was covered in "NASTY" I then took a little rubbing alcohol and held my phone face
down (screen toward the ground) as to not get it in my phone and lightly got some on
the q-tip I then lightly rubbed the q-tip across the earpiece and to my surprise, my
phone works perfectly now, with out having to have it on hearing aid mode.
P.S. My boyfriends phone had also been doing this for months and he just dealt with it
and used speaker phone. I decided to do the same thing to his phone and it now
works perfectly as well!
Hope this helps!! Crossing my fingers for you!

Aug 29, 2016 11:02 PM in response to Colimabeachby Cyy286,Thank you! That's it. I thought the original plastic wrap was perfect so I kept it on, not realizing it was blocking the call sound from coming through. As soon as I removed it the call sound became louder.

Sep 2, 2016 2:45 PM in response to KULIK121by msfarahlynn,I think it's because under General--->Accessibility-->Phone Noise Cancellation might be on. Turn it off and see if that helps.

Sep 8, 2016 12:31 PM in response to Hcryer321by Overpanic,Thanks! I was having the same problem as everyone else in this thread, and using the "hearing aid" mode trick didn't solve my problem (and isn't really a solution anyway, imho). But taking your advice, I used a Q-tip soaked in some alcohol, and scrubbed the mesh overlying the earpiece. I got some grey-brown residue on the head of the Q-tip, and after just a quick rubbing, I noticed an improvement in the volume of the earpiece. A few more scrubbings, and the earpiece was louder than I ever remember it being! Glad I found this thread!

Sep 8, 2016 3:06 PM in response to Hcryer321by twentydwarves,Thanks to Hcryer321 for solving the issue with my 2-year-old iPhone 6! I didn't think I had a grime problem as scraping the earpiece grill did not produce any dirt. Per Hcryer321's post I tried rubbing it with alcohol on a swab for 20 seconds, which still produced no visible grime. But magically the earpiece got much louder, back to normal. I suspect the very fine earpiece grill was clogged with invisible oils in opposed to dirt and grime. In any case it worked!

Sep 23, 2016 7:02 AM in response to Hcryer321by RMatSLU,This did it for me. You don't see the buildup until you wipe it down. Seems like common sense to do this but I actually didn't think of it. Clean my phone every week (taking Otterbox off to clean inside) and clean speakers below but never the earpiece. Thank you

Sep 23, 2016 8:35 AM in response to KULIK121by neillsonwheels,Easy Fix! If your phone is a few months old and this just started happening, your earpiece is likely dirty. Take a cardboard business card and use the corner to scrape side to side over the earpiece hole and wear down the corner of the card just a bit. Wipe out all the loose dirt that comes free and make a phone call. You will notice the difference immediately. If your phone is new make sure you remove the plastic screen cover.

Oct 18, 2016 8:24 AM in response to Loridori4by RobAle,This is 2016 and I'm having the same problem with the iPhone 7 Plus. The Apple's phone performance has been an issue for years, so I got the phone eyes open and I'm not surprised at it's not being as good a phone (as a phone) as others such as Samsung. I got it because I wanted a phone to fit my Apple ecosystem and in that I have not been disappointed. I also couldn't stand Android with all the extra apps Google throws in and that can't be removed. Also I was having heating issues even with my old Galaxy S4. Android did have an app that would increase phone volume - I was hoping there'd be one for iOS also, but the only ones I could find affect only the speakers, which are already loud enough.
I don't think replacing the phone will help. It's just an Apple idiosyncrasy for reasons only they know.
