I have acquired a Macbook pro late 2008, 2.4GHz Intel Core Duo and am wanting to upgrade the Ram. The handbook says 4GB is the max but Ive seen up to 8GB. I have used Crucial's scanner and it says 8GB. Which is correct please?

A late 2008 MBP will accept up to 8 GB RAM with the following specifications:
204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

The ram modules for the MacBook Pro 2008 are all 204-pin modules. If you do as OG suggested and to go OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com you will be sure of getting the correct, compatible, guaranteed memory for your MacBook Pro.
200 pin Modules are in EARLY 2008 MBPs and prior. They will NOT be compatible with 204 pin modules.
Open System profiler>Hardware Overview. What is the EXACT model identifier number?
You either do not have a late 2008 MBP or an incorrect user manual.

The serial number and othere details are confirmed on the support pages as a Late 2008.
I think its the manual 'cause all the evidence from crucial and apple support confirm your specification. Thanks to both of you for your kind attention.
You can check further if you like, by going to http://www.everymac.com and click on the MacBook Pro and then go down to your model...it helps to have the Model Identifier to double check. But that should be a Unibody which uses 204-pin modules.
To get the Model Identifier: the apple left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware and it will show the Model Identifier as MacBook Pro with a number such as 3,1. Compare that with the Everymac number to be sure.
