iTunes hangs trying to iPod software update server

Trying to update my 5th gen iPod touch (iOS 7.1.2) to iOS 8 using iTunes. After I connect the iPod to computer via USB, ITunes reports the need to update to iOS 8, but when I click to update, it displays window that says "Contacting iPod software update server" FOREVER. No other connection or surfing problems with my computer which is hardwired to the router; no problems with iPod. Is this just an Apple server overload (still??) or are there other steps I should take?

Maybe:

Update Server

Try:

- Powering off and then back on your router.

- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server

- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers

Public DNS — Google Developers

OpenDNS IP Addresses

- For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem

- Try on another computer/network

- Wait if it is an Apple problem
