Went back to the Apple Store today, they took a look at my video and swapped the phone. They said if this one has the same issue it's likely a software issue.

Well, the new device no longer has the dimming happen randomly when browsing the web/watching videos. It still does happen on the rare occasion when my device gets physically hot to the touch such as installing dozens of apps at once, or leaving Epic Zen Garden running for a substantial amount of time while holding the phone in my hand.

Was this from a clean install or from a backup? I am ****** iOS 8.1 did not resolve this issue. I am thinking it might be hardware.

Well add me to the list guys. I was testing out my new 6+ today with some hardcore 3D gaming and as soon as my phone started to heat up the brightness dropped on it's own. Thinking something was wrong I exited out to springboard and while I was pondering the problem, the brightness came back up a few minutes later. I have auto brightness off and my brightness slider cranked up all the way. I am starting to wonder if it being in a case is causing it to get too hot.

I bought the phone primarily for gaming and watching video so if this thing continues to do this every time I play a game it's really going to suck. Come on Apple, I was at the start of a beautiful love affair with my 6+ till this started happening. FIX IT!!!!!!!! My son will be getting his 6+ within the next week so I'll have to see if his does it to.

I would like to add though that when the brightness is working properly, the screen is drop dead gorgeous and the high end games look stunning.....

its a software issue for sure.

i removed the backup from itunes. started clean on both my iphone 5 as well as 5s. for days it didn't happen but last night it finally showed up on my iphone 5.

its related to overheating i think.my phone was too hot coz it was connected to 3g for maybe 2 hrs.

    Hi Everyone

My iPhone 5 started doing this when I updated to iOS8, it was fine with iOS7, so that in itself shows it's software related. I've updated my iPhone 6 and 6+ to iOS8.1 and it's still doing it.

The reset that setup from new is the usual Apple blag, I have never resolved an issue by doing this. All it's achieved is losing hours of my life that I will enver get back.

I'm beginning to think it's either does it because of heat issues and it dims the display to cool or it is just a general bug in the software. Apple will never admit to it. They probably already know of it. If it's a software issue it will suddenly resolve it back in one of the many updates and Apple will still deny any knowledge of it.

Another thought is around the power management. The battery on these weren't a great increase and Apple said that iOS 8 had improved performance monitoring which extends battery life. This is probably what's dimming the screen and over-riding any user settings.

II'm also having this issue. It's been doing it ever since I got the iphone 6. I have to reset my phone everytime it happens which gets annoying. between this and my pictures and videos not being in the correct orientation, I'm getting tired of this phone very fast.

    Hi!

Im from spain so , sorry about my bad english.

First of all, hello to everyone.

I hope that what I'm going to writ it helps people.

I have an iphone 6 and iPad mini retina both with iOS 8.1.

My iphone keeps dimming when playing games after 10 minutes when is set on maximum brightness, it dims about 10%,15%.

The problem is , my iPad mini retina it didn't do it with iOS 7, but, it does with iOS 8, just when gets little hot(not too hot) , dims until it gets cold back again.

The only way i manage to sort it out it was setting brightness to 80% and , it doesn't do it any more and it is enough brightness i think.

Really hope it helps people my experience.

    Thank you.

just have written same post in macrumors, to share my experience...

    Hi everyone

Is it me or has iOS 8.1.1 fixed the problem? I was using my phone for solid for over an hour and it didn't dim once.

Also, has the screen brightness dropped on maximum with iOS 8.1.1 ?

I,m afraid that i tried playing different games for 30 minutes periods, and still doing the same thing on iOS 8.1.1. but, that is my personal experience...

I spoke too soon. I hadn't noticed it doing it after 8.1.1 but it's still doing it. So it's not fixed as I had hoped.

iPhone 6 here and this happens to me as well. As I browse websites and either the wifi is spotty or the data connection is switching between 4G and 3G the phone gets really warm to the touch on the upper back near the apple logo. Like I said, this only happens to me when the phone has a poor or spastic data connection. Otherwise with a strong data connection the phone stays nice and cool for me. It's like iOS is running through too many code loops trying to establish a data connection. Then the device gets hot and the screen dims. I have been using my device since iPhone 6 launch day and am a web designer who uses my phone for testing websites nearly everyday so my observation is consistent during my use.

Bought an iPhone 6 about one week ago and did not restore a backup from an old device (only upgraded to iOS 8.1.2). Brightness is set to 100% but also randomly dims down as described here, e.g. during reading an article in a news app…

My iphone 6 #4 is doing it as have all of the previous ones.  Apple doesn't have a fix for it.  I live in Southwestern Florida and in bright full day sunlight the screen dims to an almost unreadable level then back again to full.  Its like flicking a switch when it does it.  The control sliders all show full on bright and the auto is set to on.  I tried it with auto off and the problem occurred more frequently.  Doesn't matter if an app is on the screen or just the home screen itself. Don't bother restoring because that does absolutely nothing but waste the time in your day.

Apple care wants me to go to a store for a replacement, but honestly I want to keep the device I have because it's the fastest out of all of them I had.  Wi-fi rocks.  LTE is blazing and touch ID is very fast.  The previous devices all had some issue with speed that I attribute to the device and not the operating system.   The last two have the same IOS version installed. All in all fairly inconsistent performance between all of those devices.
