Birthdays did not appear in iCal after update from Contacts

I thought iCal is supposed to automatically import birthdays from "contacts"? I went to contacts and selected "birthdays" to be displayed. Then typed in the bday info, saved the cards, and went to look at my ical. nothing happend. did i miss some vital yet simple step?
