Why does Bluetooth not work between my iPhone 4s and my new Macbook Pro

Hi

I have an iPhone 4s and a MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013 - I love them both!

I was mortified to find that my Apple Remote Control didnt work because there is no IR on the MBP - something I had been so used to on two previous MBPs!.

I found and downloaded the neat Rowmote Pro App and Helper - potentially they make up for the shortcoming but require that both the MBP and the iPhone are on the same Network and Schools, where I go to speak, are reluctant to provide the passwords.

I see that It may be possible to 'tether' my Mac to the iPhone and that would obviate the need for the two being on the same network, passwords etc.

However to do this I need to have Bluetooth working on both machines and, while the iPhone pairs with my car system it seemingly cannot pair with the MBP.

Why is this?

"Many ask" but few seem able to provide a solution?

iPhone and MBP are both beatiful pieces of kit but they need to work together...Please, Apple?
