Lost many iTunes on my Mac after synching to iPad

Because I had little memory left on my iPad2, I synched it with the Mac with no tunes to be left on the iPad. After the sync, I had ⚠ next to most of the tunes on my Mac and those tunes will not play. If I try to play one of these, I get the message "The song ****** *** ** could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" If I click on "locate", I get Finder. If I then go to "music" in Finder, I can't restore the song. How do I get rid of those darn ⚠ s

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.1)

As you see, the (!) Next to a song indicates the song can't be found.

TThanks Nubz. But it didn't work. I found that the path for the unusable songs contains a "trash." command. Don't know how it got there but that seems to be the problem. I'm wondering if there is some way to transfer my iPod files which are good to my Mac without ruining them also. then I would have all my music back again.
