Lost many iTunes on my Mac after synching to iPad

Because I had little memory left on my iPad2, I synched it with the Mac with no tunes to be left on the iPad. After the sync, I had ⚠ next to most of the tunes on my Mac and those tunes will not play. If I try to play one of these, I get the message "The song ****** *** ** could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" If I click on "locate", I get Finder. If I then go to "music" in Finder, I can't restore the song. How do I get rid of those darn ⚠ s
