Q: Internet Accounts keeps asking for Google password

I've enabled 2-step verification on my Google account.

I've had this account set up in Mail.app so it has an entry in my System Preferences > Internet Accounts

Now, with 2-step from Google, there are Application specific passwords. Mail.app can no longer use my Google account password. I had to log in to Google and create a password just for Mac Mail.app.

That worked just fine. Mail is now checking my Gmail for me.

When I open System Preferences > Internet Accounts and look at my Google account, it asks for my password. My Google ID password no longer works, as I'd expect. So I entered my Application Specific password for Mail.app.

This is the problem. It asks me three times, every time I want to look at my Google account details in System Preferences.

Sound familiar to anyone? Anyone solve this?

I tried creating an app specific password for System Preferences, but that didn't work.

I just had exactly the same issue!

    Some extra info:

    • Happened only in 2 of my gmail account (have several)
      • One of them had 2nd factor auth enabled (account 1)
      • The other one use simply a password (account 2)
    • Both accounts accept the password on the 3rd try
      • for the account ,1 it is the application specific password
      • for the account, 2 it is the normal account password
    • Moreover:
      • account 1 uses: Mail, Contacts and Calendar
      • account 2 uses only Mail
    • Right now the issue in both accounts is 100% reproducible
    • Account 2's password is rather long (>18 chars) and complex (Upper, Lower, Number and Symbols)
      • This could indicate and issue, but I bet there many more user who had such extremes
      • Even if that was the issue, account 1's application specific password is pretty simple and of a fixed size

Seems like a bug on Apple's side...

Hi, I have been having this problem for a while too.  I am afraid I can't remember with which MAC update it started.  I ignore it and everything seems to work eventually on its own, however this is not ideal.

Have the same problem. Google requires a password to be entered in internet accounts every day.

Does not seem to save it. Irritating thing. And agree that it must have started after a Mav upgrade.

Have tried to remove the keychain and then restart. This was suggested on the net.

Did not solve the problem and moreover some passwords were gone. But I learned a lot about keychain

    in the proces.

    Thank you.

Read the post, but it did not help solve the problem. The EHBO kit could check and uncheck boxes, but could not click on repair. I have OSX 10.10.4.

On the other hand I would not know where to find the key that Google needs. And I just wondered, when I do enter my password when asked for, why does it go to an apple web page? It is something like apple.gil. Next time I will try to note it down, it goes very fast.

    HI EVERYONE,

I am beginning to think that this could be an internet connection problem, or delay..

This request for Google internet account password only comes up for me when I switch my computer on or wake it up from sleep.  I ignore it and carry on working then when I go into email or what ever, again everything seems to work. Perhaps my Mac wakes up in the wrong order ( not sure if this makes sense to the more knowledgable of you ) it tries to log into accounts before the internet connection has completed and therefore can not get in, assumes it is a password thing and makes the request.

    Just a thought.

You are right! Pop up only appears when I start up the Mac. But it does affect my email. When I dont enter my password, mail will be blocked. Mail comes in as soon as I enter the password. But it is an interesting thought that the problem occurs when Mac wakes up and still is a bit sleepy. I like your line of thought!

I went to Apple support couple of days ago and found a suggestion to delete a file in the keychain and restart the computer. It should solve a corrupt key chain. After some hesitation I did that, copied the file to my I cloud drive and deleted it from ~Library/Keychains. Restarted the computer and yes it did make a new file, but I lost some passwords. Funny that it is always the most difficult to recover passwords that disappear. Like those of your bank account. It did not solve the problem though. Yesterday I entered my Google account, cause I want to make Google part of it. No answeer from them yet. But at the same time I did a security check on my account and guess what: no pop up today. Could it be that just entering your Google account may solve the problem. We will see the coming days. Another thought has popped up in my head. Recently I added Google apps in my Android telephone. It synchronizes with my wifi. Then decided to   delete Google mail from my telephone. Could it be that this causes a mismatch. I dont know.

Were on a roll here of brain storming....

Perhaps it is not the keychain, but a sequence error in the OS trying to do things in the wrong order which then upsets the log in procedures for Google e-mail when the computer wakes up, or is switched on.   A lot of people are having this problem ( I have read this in other forums too) and it only seems to be MAC os and google mail so I am guessing after an update in the os ( a few updates ago now though) they stopped playing together well.

It would be nice if Someone from Apple MAC helped out here.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Thank you Eric Root, that is a good suggestion and i will do that now.  Hopefully all the others who have posted here will do this too.

Just to confirm that the dreaded pop up did not reappear today. That is the second day without.

I just hope that entering my Google account and doing a security check solved the problem.

Actually I just went through the steps of the security check, checked ok everywhere and entered a new telephone number for verification.

Takes 5 minutes but worth the try.

Also see this link to Apple support. It is not exactly the same problem, but it might have the same source.

And there is one more possibility to check. At the moment I will leave everything as it is to see whether the problem is solved.

But I noticed that the password in my Mail account is empty. Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts >

There are three tabs, the most left is account information and you will be able to enter your password under your user name.

At this moment the field for password is empty, supposedly because it is overruled by Internetaccuonts.

However if the pop up would return I would certainly try to reenter my password there and see what happens.

Eric's suggestion is ok, but Apple is not the quickest in solving problems.

    Hi,

Now isn't this interesting, I have not done anything and now I think about it the pop up has stopped for me also.  at least 2 days but could be a little longer.

I Just looked at the email account for gmail and the password is also empty so perhaps it is just like that as my email is working fine.  There have been some updates on os recently so perhaps it fixed the problem.  Wouldn't that be nice?
