How did you update to iOS 8 ? If via your computer's iTunes then the update process would look to copy back the books and PDFs from your iTunes library (or iBooks app if using a Mac with Mavericks on it) - no iTunes downloads are included in a device's backup, nor the contents of the Videos, Music and iBooks apps.

Do you have the books and PDFs in your iTunes library (iBooks app on Mavericks) ? If you do then you should be able to sync them back to your iPad. Or if the books are ibooks then you might (if they are still in the store and you haven't changed countries since buying them) be able to redownload ibooks via the Purchased tab in the iBooks app, and the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage on your computer's iTunes.

I am reading your responses and you are completely ignoring the fact that the iBooks pdfs and saved documents are completely disappearing after the upgrade. I have spent all day restoring , then upgrading, when I do this and open iBooks I can see all the books...for about 2-4 seconds then they disappear. This has reoccurred 4 times in a row today. So I repeat and restore to factory, I back up from iTunes, I upgrade to ios 8, then open iBooks only to have years of stored documents appear for a few seconds after the restore/upgrade only to disappear again!!!

Have you read my previous posts on this thread ? An iTunes backup does not include any of your iTunes downloads, nor the contents of the iBooks, Music nor Videos apps (nor does an iCloud backup) - an iTunes restore looks to pick them up from your iTunes library (and iBooks app if using an up-to-date Mac).

Prior to starting the update did you do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over to your computer's iTunes (and if using a Mac then with iBooks on it then copied them over to that) ? Even though PDFs are not bought from iTunes the Transfer Purchases has always copied from over from my devices iBooks app. If not then the restore will be trying to copy your PDFs back, but won't be able to - so after a restore you might see how the iBooks bookshelf used to look with a 'memory' of the PDFs on it, which after a couple of seconds then updates to show the app's actual contents with missing PDFs/books disappearing. Restoring again-and-again won't make any difference unless you add the missing PDFs back to your iTunes (or Mac's iBooks) library so that it can restore them back.

apple....just shoot me....

king penguin, i am looking for "File > Devices > Transfer Purchases" you keep talking about.

all i have on my itunes are symbols

issue: updating an ipad 2 from 6 to 8.1.3, using a pc windows 7 home for the start,

another option would be to use windows 8

worry: that i will lose notes, books, etc.

completed a backup to computer, and to icloud, according to settings it should be backing up all apps to icloud.

started update and advise that there are purchase items on the ipad and that i should transfer them..

i have done synching, item by item music, ibooks etc from my device, but they do not show in my computers itunes files....

why cant apple have a simple connect that outlines where the data is stored.....so one can grab it and move it. the only obvious stuff are photos. everything else is hidden.....

frustrated

I thought I lost them all. But... Do you see the bottom bar with "my books" on the left and "purchased" on the right.

Hit My books and you find some. Not all. OMG you think... because where is the library...with all my categories.

At the top of the page is a blue "Books" with arrow pointing down. Tap it!!!!! Y E S, there they all are.

If you want book covers, or written our or other info, look to the upper left-hand corner and hit the little lines and there are your choices.

<happy dance> for me finding all my books!!!!

There was a time when I loved all things Apple, but increasingly I am beginning to hate how Apple interefere with my stuff.

I am on vacation 2000 miles from my iMac and iTunes backup, I have just settled down to read some of my stored iBooks and pdf's on my iPad and similar to other posts here the titles flashed up for 2-3secs then they disapeared, and there is absolutely no way that I can get them back.

Thanks Apple for wasting my time and messing up my iPad.

If Apple included flash storage in their devices this would not have happened.

Am I mad about this ? You bet.

Dear seastones07

Lots of Apple devices (eg. Most MacBook models) have flash storage. For those Apple devices that don't, what's the hardware connection to this iBooks software issue?

No Apple iOS devices have Adobe Flash software. Again, if this is what you meant, how does not having this software affect Apple's programming of content transfers in iBooks with system upgrades?

I found this problem annoying and time wasting. It also annoys me that Apple is non-transparent about how it is fixing this problem (or not). However, I still find overall that Apple wastes less of my time than I did when I used PCs

As for your problem, if you look earlier in the thread there will be a good fix. Take your time and read King Penguin's posts. I have a post where I summarise in detail what worked for me when I applied King Penguin's advice when transferring iBooks content to a new computer.

Perhaps you should read my post again. I realise that KingPenguin has posted some very helpful information, but this does not help me when I am so far away from my home computer and backup. I had hoped that all of my iBooks and pdf's that I had stored on my iPhone for reading when on vacation would still be somewhere on my device not on a backup computer 2000 miles away.

My comments concerning flash storage was perhaps unclear. I actually meant that I would like to have a removable flash storage slot for a microSD card or similar, hopefully in this way the IOS would not wipe it or erase items from it without checking first, surely this could be possible. Apple's continual push to the use of iCloud is just an annoyance to me.

Previous posters who have lost valuable work documents must surely be very angry.
