Oct 20, 2014 12:31 AM in response to Joseph Polk1by King_Penguin,The way that books are managed changed with OS X Mavericks, not iTunes 12 (or Yosemite). You manage your books on your Mac via its iBooks app, but you still select and sync books to a device via iTunes, that has not changed.
Connect your device to your Mac, select the device icon towards the top left of the iTunes screen, and select the Books category on the left-hand bar and you then select and sync books to the device

Nov 26, 2014 4:19 AM in response to chlokletby cabowser,YES! This is the way to go. On my ipad I searched iTunes Spotlight and it came up like an "itunes ap store" with books. At the bottom I selected purchased and there they were! Easy!

Dec 21, 2014 8:58 AM in response to King_Penguinby dinky2,Yes, it makes perfectly sense to NOT include data in a backup. Why would you need that ?? I always make backups for fun, not to use them in case of an emergency or so. So that's why Apple only copy what THEY think is important. Stuff the customer. So first make a mess of an IOS8 update, leaving my iPad unusable and then allow me to restore only part of the content. Makes perfect sense to me.

Dec 21, 2014 9:31 AM in response to dinky2by King_Penguin,Sync them back from the Books part of your computer's iTunes library, assuming that you'd File > Devices > Transfer Purchases when you had them on your iPad

Dec 21, 2014 2:22 PM in response to King_Penguinby dinky2,In my view this should be done automatically. Creating a backup is creating a backup. Excluding things which then must be backed up manually does not make sense. When I backup my iPad, I expect that everything is backed up and a restore will restore everything.

Dec 22, 2014 12:19 AM in response to dinky2by King_Penguin,The contents of the iBooks, Music and Videos apps (and photos synced from a computer nor actual apps) are not included in a backup. An iCloud will redownload purchases that it can from the store, an iTunes backup will restore from the relevant part of your iTunes library.

Jan 2, 2015 12:06 PM in response to King_Penguinby skywave-rider,I wish I had read this thread before updating to iOS 8.1xxx.
I lost all my .pdf files, a lot. All my books went away, but was able to recover those as they were purchased.
The most important items were the .PDFs, which I created. It is a major problem. I have no idea why Apple did not let me, and us, know this was going to be a problem before updating. No one would think an OS update would trash your files, and yes, I should have moved them by emailing them one at a time, because the iTunes backup process is problematic and inscrutable. But I did not. It does not feel good. Using the iPad as a tool as opposed to a casual entertainment device is not possible for my needs. I wish I had solutions for others in my circumstance, but I do not. It's important to voice the problems though, because someone may be able to avert disaster if they read this thread.

Jan 4, 2015 11:15 PM in response to Maik1551by King_Penguin,You've tried File > Devices > Transfer Purchases when connected to your computer's iTunes - if using a Mac with Mavericks or Yosemite on it then do File > Move Books From iTunes in its iBooks app. That has always copied over PDFs and/or epubs that are in the iBooks apps on my devices

Jan 10, 2015 10:10 PM in response to King_Penguinby Ruadh2,Dear King_Penguin
I have just moved my son's iTunes from our family iMac to our MacBookPro, which will become his home computer for high school. I followed the Apple instructions and moved the iTunes Media Folder and also the iPad backups from his account on the family iMac either by Firewire cable to hard drive or by gigabit ethernet via the router. (Hardware and system details in my signature below)
I found the same problem as above after I'd replicated his iPad to the "new" computer. A number of his book purchases were missing from his synced iPad and from his iTunes. Following your advice, we opened iBooks on the "new" MBP for the first time. After signing on it found 59 books. No more could be found or moved from iTunes after that. The 'missing' books were there, but only in iCloud and would needs be downloaded again.
So, I went back to his account on the iMac which I'd not yet reset, and opened iBooks there. Again he'd not used iBooks so it opened from scratch, and this time I used the Move from iTunes command and 79 books appeared locally, including the others that were only on iCloud for the MBP.
Most of these "missing" books are textbooks which are between 1GB to 3GB and I don't want to re-download them from iCloud via slow ADSL2+. How do I get them from the old iTunes account on the iMac to the new account on the MBP please?

Jan 10, 2015 11:43 PM in response to Ruadh2by King_Penguin,Your books should be stored under : /Users/username/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents (change 'username' to the user account name being used on the Mac) - they may not show in there under there book name, they have an alphanumeric name, but when copied and added to the iBooks app on your other Mac they should show in the app with their proper name.

Jan 11, 2015 6:37 AM in response to King_Penguinby Ruadh2,Thanks King_Penguin
I found those files, transferred all the files in the "Books" folder, including the Books.plist file, to the "new" computer. I replaced most but not all of the few existing files in the drive including the .plist file (which I figured should reflect the copied files, not the previous ones in the drive), where the destination files seemed to be older versions. I then opened iTunes and nothing seemed to have changed. I then rebooted and synced my son's iPad and the files all reappeared as if by magic.
So, to transfer iTunes content to a new computer, you seem to need to do the following:
- Back up your iTunes library by copying it to an external drive - Apple Support
- Move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support
- PLUS: Manually move your old iTunes backups (~Library>Application Support>Mobilesync>Backup>) to the new computer.
- PLUS: Manually move the content of your Books folder (~Library>Containers>Data>Documents>iBooks>Books>) to the new computer as per your instructions.
Thanks again.

Jan 11, 2015 6:12 PM in response to Ruadh2by Ruadh2,Oops! In previous reply, last dot point, I omitted the critical folder in the path between Containers> and Data> from King_Penguin's instructions. It's >com.apple.BKAgentService>
Sorry!
