my mac is running slow and hot

More than likely you've probably accumulated some dust in your fan and vent. Usually when your consistently running media (especially a TV show) your fans are gonna spin a little faster and probably accumulate some dust over time. If dust is blocking your fan then no heat will escape and your mac will continue to get hot. You may also wanna consider upgrading your RAM.

I used to have the exact same MBP as you and dust was usually the issue in these situations. Keep it clean!

First: what did you do just before it started getting slow and hot?

Second: whatever is the cause, it will be necessary to add Ram eventually. Even with Mavericks you are better off with at least 4 GB of ram, better still 8GB: this is easy to do and not expensive. Look at the Crucial and OWC sites, for the exact specs and the price, and how to do it.

Do this at a later moment.

Third: Etrecheck is an information list to avoid a lot of questions and very helpful, not really a diagnosis.

Fourth: You have McAfee software installed: this type of software is choking your system, and should be removed completely, it may clear your issues already.

Do not use socalled uninstallers or cleaners. Not even McAfee uninstallers that you may find on the internet.

After this uninstall, restart and then empty the trash bin.

Fifth

some (in my opinion) necessary cleaning should be done:

1. remove all entries in SystemPreferences->Users&groups->LoginItems, except the Canon IJ scanner, use the minus sign underneath,

restart after that.

then uninstall Bittorrent and uTorrent, BOTH, they are the same and use the same plists and other files. I advise strongly, to not install and use these apps. Often you get "manipulated" software downloaded with these apps. And they broadcast data about you. Where do you think they make their money?.

2. uninstall all WesternDigital ("smart") software, it is counterproductive at the least.

3. uninstall the SiteAdvisor and Amazon extensions in Safari : Safari->Preferences->Extensions

4. uninstall the blueray software, that should remove the fabio.kext also.

5. I am not sure which app uses MacFuse, so leave that alone for a while.

6. In SystemPreferences, open Java, disable it: you do not need it probably, but if you have software that needs it, it will notfy you. Think about it whether you need that software and uninstall it.

Come back with a new etrecheck list.

But also you have software installed that is better gone. That may or may not be the cause.

1. You have or had MacKeeper installed. A real Mac killer.

2. You have Seagate disk software installed. Connect the disk, backup any thing that you do not want to loose, then format that disk with DiskUtility: Mac OS Extended (journalled). Then uninstall the Seagate software on your Mac. It should be carefully (Seagate uninstaller probably in the installer dmg) uninstalled.

3. Uninstall Paragon NTFS. For reading NTFS drives you do not need that, only for writing, but it is "wringing" in OSX. If you absolutely need it, re install, but only after you are sure that the issues are gone here, and so you can see whether it causes problems or not.

4. Omnibar (Safari) must go completely, in Finder go to

MacintoshHD/Library/Application\ Support/SIMBL/Plugins/SafariOmnibar.bundle

and delete the Safari.Omnibar.bundle.

5. Bluestacks: I am not familiar with this. The problem is here that you very probably downloaded it from Softonic: never download software from Softonic, CNET, Download.com, and lately Macupdate or such aggregation sites: the manipulate the software to install malware at the same time. Read also in TheSafeMac about this.

6. I know what Tunnelbear is, you may not need all this privacy then uninstall. I will test it again this week.

Last but not least be sure you have a good backup strategy.

Tunnelbear is no problem. In some cases it even makes surfing faster.

But I wonder where you use it for...

At the same time I tested Hola, no problems either.

Difference between the two: Hola is free altogether (I wonder where they make their money), Tunnelbear is only free for a limited amount of data.

Problem description:

I downloaded Yosemite. I already have Mavericks software. My computer which is a 2011 Macbook Pro is now running slower and hotter and takes forever to boot up. It also shows a loss of battery power, running out in half the time. It has weird glitches like my being unable to copy and paste from my browsers, Safari and Firefox.
