Q: iPad 2 upgrade to iOS 8 causing performance issues?

I upgraded my iPad 2 to iOS 8 and it's now no longer functioning quickly enough to be usable.  For example, it takes several seconds for the screen to simply shift from portrait to landscape.  The delay in typing alone makes it unusable.  Anyone else having the same problem?  I tried to reinstall iOS 7 but wasn't successful.  Anyone figure out how to fix this?

A further update in the battle I have with iOS 8.

I made an appointment and stopped by the Genuis bar this weekend. In had was my iPad 2, and my wife's iPad 2. The only difference between the devices is iOS version 7 and 8. After doing some show and tell with the tech, we once again erased all contents and settings from my iPad 2. After more poking and prodding of the device, the Genius stated that they would be sending information to corporate about the behavior.

I would recommend doing a reset to factory default with the iTunes program and don't put your backup back on until you check it out, with this new revision, iOS 8.1, which has some bug fixes, besides new features which are included.

And, report how it's going with the new revision ...

The problem with your statement is that it doesn't help anyone in any way, shape or form ... because ... we've already seen from other users that it does help, and a very few that they still have some problems. AND ... you give no information about your model, what system you had before, what amount of memory space you have, if it is WiFi only or cellular ... therefore what information you did just pass along here is TOTALLY USELESS!!

That's not tech support, that's just "mouthing off" in a useless way! If you want to be useful in a tech support way, then include all your information I mentioned.

And here is a very useful procedure to follow, whether one is upgrading or not. It should be reset to factory default condition at least once a year, no matter what. Did you do it already?!

SSorry but disagree star traveler....(oh!..and theres the double letter again..nuts) ...the update does no help much, it may look like it has helped for a while..then bang..the probs are all there again, plus a few others that I am noticing. Not gona list them, done it before with support and in this thread. It is just that we are fed up with it all, reseting and doing all the suggestions to some degree helps, but they are still there. We have just had enough of asking for help from support and getting nothing. And whats wrong with a bit of venting...its ok to vent on this thread as there will be plenty who understand as they are having the same issues and there is comfort in knwoing your not alone re these matters. Hope we get a solution to theSe issues soon. (!!!...aaaand...there it is the upper case letter that pops up out of no where in the middle of a word..another issue that has no solution)

If ... in this "users helping other users" forum, you cannot find solutions that you can implement from these other users, there is nothing more for you to do in these forums, because that is all it is here ... nothing more.

We have just had enough of asking for help from support and getting nothing.

This is NOT Apple Support here. This is a "users helping other users" forum, in which a user poses a problem and other users suggest answers that the first user can implement on their own iPad. If that doesn't work, then that's the end of the story for "users helping other users". And ... the fact of the matter is that you don't have to come here, but the idea is that people come here because they want to see what other users have for solutions that they can implement. So, as I said, you don't have to come here, because Apple provides Official Apple Support. It sounds like you're more suited for that, instead of this "users helping other users" forum.

And whats wrong with a bit of venting...its ok to vent on this thread as there will be plenty who understand as they are having the same issues and there is comfort in knwoing your not alone re these matters.

What's wrong with it ... just that it's against the "Terms of Use" for this forum. This forum is for "users helping other users" in offering solutions for problems presented, in way the user can implement that solution himself on his on iPad. Apple set up the forum that THAT purpose and not for a "venting forum". HOWEVER Apple did provide a place to VENT if you feel that this is exactly what you have to do ... and that's their Feedback link. I'll provide you with that link for your "venting" and also the official Apple Support channels for your Apple Support, of which there is NO Apple Support here on this forum.

You shouldn't be misleading people. It certainly has for other users posting on it ... :-) ...

I upgraded to IO8.1 today and continue to have performance issues as noted by other users - specifically apps and Safari are slow to open or stall out completely.  Videos on YouPlayer can stall and get stuck playing the same thing over and over again (like a needle stuck on an old phonograph record). Closing the app and reopening it does not help - needle still stuck!

It does seem the performances issues started with the new IOS8.

    Star Traveler,

Let's not talk about who may be misleading who in these threads. We may all respectfully disagree, but based on the sheer volume of complaints regarding performance in this thread and oh so many others, the masses would seem to hold to the fact that 8.x is a performance issue on the iPad 2. I will grant that many issues with crashing and stability can be resolved by reloading the iOS. Once the device is reloaded there is still a performance hit. This is acknowledged by both sides of the current debate.

It's probably because it's a new operating system. They still need to work out kinks and things with all the apple stuff. The same thing happened to people with ios 7. Eventually it will all be fixed with a few updates hopefully

It's clearly misleading people by saying this ... "Ios 8.1 dosen't solve any performance issue." ... which is the exact statement I was replying to (another poster).

It clearly does solve some users' performance issues, by their own statements here on this forum. It deserves to be made clear.

In addition, I can't find any confirmation that it's the "masses" that hold there is a problem. From my observation the masses see absolutely no problem at all. It's the small minority, who show up here on these forums, who are having problems. And saying it that way doesn't mean they are having no problem at all, it's simply acknowledging the fact that they are in the very small minority. Of course they still have to find some solution, and I'm confident that they will.

I will agree to disagree about the issues and resolution. However stating that someone is misleading people because their opinion differs from yours is not helping the issue either.

So far in my experience there is no resoluton for the severe performance impact of iOS 8 in any form as released by Apple.

It's real simple ... if you see a post that says iOS 8.1 has helped me and the performance has improved (and there are quite a few saying that) ... then it is clearly misleading to say that it doesn't solve any performance issues. THAT is not a matter of opinion, because it's a FACT that anyone can see on this forum that people are saying that.

There's absolutely "no opinion" there ... it's plainly lying.
