I received an audio message via text and deleted it before I synced the iPhone with my laptop.
Is it gone for good? or is there some way to recover it from the iPhone directly??

It will be gone unless you had a back up before the audio message was deleted. The default setting is to delete it after 2 minutes. If you want to have them saved for the future, go to Settings > Messages > Expire (under Audio Messages) and tap Never.
