Other Apple apps have already updated for iOS8, like Keynote or iMovie. Regular photos app doesn't have enough edition options to replace iPhotos.

That is not very likely, since Apple recommends migrating to Photos.

You may want to send feedback to Apple about the missing features, so that they know, that the users want the advanced iPhoto editing features.
How sad, I really loved iPhotos😢
I miss it too. I could not find any third-party app so far, that has brushed adjustments like iPhoto has, tags and captions, and Journals.
I Doubted "Steve" would have permitted such an user unfriendly way of dumping iPhoto!!! The only camera enhancement feature is just... non existent!
