I had the same exact issue! Apple does not cheaply make their devices, but yes sometimes they will have defects or issues. Some on apples side some on the users side. If you have dropped your phone recently or it has been jostled in any way, the connectors up in the earpiece could have possibly come loose resulting in no sound. If you are a "tech savvy" person like me this is an easy fix. To fix this issue, you just need to, open the phone take the screen off then the earpiece and make sure the connector right above the little speaker is clean and firmly connected. But if you are not exactly "tech savvy", then I would look up a disassembley/ reassembly of an iPhone 6 screen on YouTube. And if that's too complicated for you, then I would recommend taking the phone into a repair shop or expirienced friend to fix your iPhone. I did this and it worked like a charm hope it does for you too!

Ps: I know this question was asked in 2014 and it's 2017, but this should help people currently having this issue solve it.

This is exactly what happened to my iPhone 6. Purchased brand new from Apple! Issues with hearing via headphones that were never consistent... eventually seemed to work alright for a while after fiddling with settings, then all of a sudden- no earphones working for anything, including music and also no sound without earphones unless "loudspeaker" was selected. An iOS update seemed to fix my latest issue... but I am dubious as to how long this more concerned about the intake problems I had. Seems like lots of people have had the same problems.

Thanks, this worked for me on iOS 10.2.1. I noticed an increase in ear speaker volume whereas before it was barely audible.

Detailed steps:

1. Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing Devices

2. Enable hearing aid mode

3. Make/receive phone call (unsure if this step is necessary; note volume will not be fixed yet) and hang up

4. Disable hearing aid mode

5. Go back to Hearing section in Accessibility

6. Enable phone noise cancellation

This is for everybody. This is not a phone issue, it is a iOS issue. I had the exact same issues with my 5s and my brand new SE. So far apple has not acknowledged the problem. Why replace a perfectly good phone when the problems is not the phone. Yesterday I did at least four hard resets (my only sure fire cure). I use the earphone a lot in my noisy work environment with the following issues: 1> Hear the phone ring in the brand new Apple ear bud, answer the call and cannot hear or be heard. Pull out the jack, cannot hear on the earpiece. Hit speaker and suddenly it starts working, but poorly and with a horrible echo. 2> Finish a phone call on my ear bud, try to switch to incoming call. Dead air as above. 3> Listen to podcast on earbud. Try to answer incoming phone call as above. Dead air as above.

All the crap about aftermarket products and consumer errors is just Apple blaming the end user for their mistakes in the firmware/iOS/whatever. They need to 1> acknowledge this and 2> fix it!!

My problems started when I upgraded IOS. Rebooting had no effect. I had luck following the suggestion to activate General > Accessibility > Hearing Devices > Hearing Aid Mode and then turn it back off. The phone started working normally again for me after that and I haven't had any further problems. Apple does indeed suck at figuring this stuff out and helping people with their problems.

Don’t worry. Please follow below tips and check if it works:

iPhone 7 is a wonderful smart phone, mostly people purchase this phone because the less chances of defect, but if you are getting this issue in you new iPhone 7 then calm down you have your phone under Gaurantee.

To save your time you can try following steps, but I would not suggest you mess with its hardware:

1. Check the Mute Button is disabled.

2. Check your headphones in other phone with other phone if they are working or
not.

3. Restart iPhone 7

4. Rif nothing above is working then try to restore all settings

5. One last option is to repair the OS.

If nothing works then get to iPhone repair center or get free quotes from any expert.

I know the question has long since been resolved. But I had a similar issue with not being able to hear when making and receiving phone calls unless I put the phone on speaker with my iPhone 6s Plus. And tried to fix the problem myself and ended up voiding the warranty because I damaged the ports on the bottom and it cost me $150 via my phone insurance with Asurion. So if anyone has this issue I'd highly recommend calling your phone carrier and see if it can be replaced under warranty instead of trying to fix yourself.

Hi, just wanted to thank you for the tip. Indeed it looks like a contacts / calendar conflict issue between Google account and Apple account contacts synchronization. Because I have no Iphone contacts (just moved from Android to Iphone) I have disabled the cloud synchronization for contacts and calendar and it worked.

Note: phone freezes after I have disable contacts so I guess it did not like my approach 🙂

I will see how long it takes, yesterday I did another fix from this forum (while receiving a call on speaker I have started music on the phone in the same time. After that plugged the headphones and it worked but not for long - this was fix for jack issue however I think is software issue as it turn out)

I will get back here if needed to update if is the case (hope not).

I just had this problem a few days ago and one of the posts above from Serendipity did the trick for me. If when you adjust your volume it says headphones, it's probably because something is stuck in there. The suggestion was to use some canned air and blow it in the headphone jack hole a few times until when you adjust the volume it reads ringer instead. I had to do it a couple times but that worked for me. If you get those results when adjusting volume that will hopefully work. Good luck!
