Could you post more information about the model and build/year configuration
of the computer, as well as the operating system version and step as installed?
Did the school allow you to have access to (for use at home) an install-restore
DVD or CD set of the software Mac OS version now running in the computer?
That is an old model, if from 2001, and may require an older WEP security setting
and some other wi-fi access not supported by more modern wireless base stations.
You should be able to use Ethernet and connect direct from the computer to an
ISP cable or ADSL, etc internet access product.

The first step here would be to correctly identify the exact model build year and
configuration of product and its Mac OS version(s) so as to attempt to figure out
what to try & do next. Also identify your immediate internet access point hardware.

This ASC discussion sees occasional use, as time passes by the hardware and
the applicable software is obsoleted; and so seeking answers may be slow now.
In any event...
Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
