No audio after firmware update

I have just updated the firmware and now have lost my audio devices. If I go to the sound system preference panel, I get "No output devices found".

Strangely, before firmware upgrade, I got sound on Mac OS, but nothing in Boot camped windows, now Windows is trying to recognise a device, but has no drivers and no sound on the Mac. Weird and v. annoying.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You do not say which audio device. You will need to check for a new driver from the mfr - which may not be available yet.

No special device, just the internal audio. The windows wizard talks about a device on the High Definintion Audio bus so I guess the driver should be from Apple.

The Windows problem is kind of annoying, but the fact that OS-X doesn't recognise the hardware is more worrying.

I've tried resetting pram and the SMC but none of this did any good. I couldn't find the switch inside the tower, so used the other method and pulled all the leads and waited.

BTW Resseting the pram instructions tells you to wait for the second startup sound..but when you have no audio, how do you know 😉

Do you have a spare drive you can use to clean install Mac OS X and see if it has the same problems?

Good idea! I have my HD partitioned for boot camp and sadly I'm living in the windows world at present and can't afford to lose that work. I don't (at present) have much on the mac side and a .mac sync will back it up for me, so I'll have a go at rebuilding the Mac side. See if that does the trick.

Rather than wiping outyou Mac OS X partition why don't you spend the small amount of money and buy a new drive? Surely it would be of use for cloning/backup purposes at a minimum so it should really pay for itself.

Thanks for the advice, but I only had a few files so after backing them up, I reformated the Mac partition and reinstalled the OS. Still no audio. Then I updated - still no audio. So I guess it's time to get on to the Apple Support guys. When I get some kind of response, I'll post it.

So, having talked to Apple Support and gone through all the obvious stuff, I've got to take it to the local service center...ho humm.

BTW, I was very impressed that the German Service line representative could speak English (and very good English), far better than my current level of German. Still they didn't solve my problem 😟

For anyone still interested. The last firmware update seemed to fix my sound problem, and a new motherboard has licked a problem I had with the machine shutting down when going into sleep mode (and losing all my work).
