Q: IOS 8 apps store badge issue on iphones after sync to Itunes

Did updates to my apps thru I-tunes on my macbook.  Then sync both my iphone 5s and 4s (both run on IOS 8) to the I-tunes.  All apps that needed update  got synched and updated on both iphones.

But, the App Store red-badge icon still showed the notifications for apps needs to be updated.

Also on the update page of the apps,  the already updated apps still remained on the 'Available Update' section (did not moved to 'Updated' section)  although the "install" buttons have all changed into "Open".

Did a re-sync, turning on-off  notification for the apps in 'setting',  device shutdown, reboot, turning wifi on-off.   Nothing worked

Anyone experiencing the same issues here ?? .. Any solution ?

iPhone 5s, iOS 8, same issue on iphone 4s on IOS 8

I Just did the suggested fix to toggle the airplane mode off. I first closed the App Store > turned Airplane mode on > opened App Store> it then showed the update for the apps and the Update All button > I turned airplane mode off then once connected to wi-if I hit update all and they updated. It has not come back. if that's a fix then there it is. Anyone keep having the problem return?

I still have the issue on my iPhone 5s. I did have it on my iPad Air. I don't have it on my iPad Air 2. The full problem synopsis is thus:

When you update your applications via iTunes on a Mac or a PC and then Sync your iOS device, the AppStore badge icon does not change to reflect the fact that your out-of-date Apps have been updated. When your iOS device is in this Apps-need-updates meta state, the offending Apps appear on the Update page with an "Open" button rather than an "Update" button. Further the "Update All" Button is inactive.

There are two workarounds, and I'm not calling them fixes on purpose, is to force the AppStore program back into a state where it thinks the Apps Can be Updated. nammi59's workaround does this by forcing the AppStore into a state where it cannot contact the update server and then initiate an update before it realizes that your apps are already updated. It video gamish and temporary. The other fix is to avoid updating all the Apps within iTunes and them update a handful of them on your iOS device.

The bug appears to be that the AppStore on iOS doesn't recognize apps updated via an iTunes sync for the purpose of changing the AppStore badge icon. The badge icon does change when your device connects the update server and you have more updates available. In gory detail:

    1. Your iPhone says it has two updates via the AppStore Badge icon.
    2. If you check the AppStore::Updates pane on the phone, it lists the two apps that can be updated with buttons that say "Update".
    3. The "Update All" button on this pane is active.
    4. You go into iTunes on your computer. On the iTunes:Apps pane you click "Update All Apps".
    5. When that finishes you Sync your iPhone to iTunes.
    6. After this, the AppStore badge icon on the phone doesn't change. It still says you have two updates.
    7. If you visit the AppStore:Updates pane on the phone, now the same two apps are listed but the button to the right of them says "Open" rather than "Update".
    8. The "Update All" button on this pane is inactive.

From here you can fix the badge Icon by:

    1. Waiting until a new update becomes available. Once a single different app can be updated the AppStore Badge Icon counter on the iPhone will drop from two to one. It will increase normally as more apps can be updated.
    2. or Forcing a local update on the iPhone via nammi59's Airplane mode workaround.

You can avoid the problem by being careful not to update all the apps on your iPhone. Updating even a single app locally on the phone rather then through iTunes changes the AppStore badge icon correctly.

How to fix badge indicators on iPhone/iPad where the application on the device indicates "Open" rather than "Update".  Sometimes things get stuck.  Here's how to remedy the issue:

    1.  Plug your device into your computer and open iTunes (latest version)

    2.  Go to Apps and update all your apps on your computer (relative to iOS of course)

    3.  Go to "Summary" for the device and click to back up to the computer <not iCloud>

    4.  Back up your device for safety

    5.  It will ask you to "Apply" the changes - do so

    6.  While still in that configuration and still plugged in, go to your device

    7.  Open "App Store"

    8.  At this point it should allow you to perform updates since it is now getting the updates from your computer rather than OTA (over the air)

You can then revert your settings back to iCloud if you wish.

I tried the USB-Cable fix this morning. It didn't work for me. My phone's normal mode is Backup to this computer because I use TimeMachine on the Mac so I always have a good backup handy. Opening App Store on the phone while connected via USB cable showed "Update" for about 1 second. It had reverted to "Open" by the time I hit the button.

Now using an iPhone 6 and iOS9, and iTunes 12.3 on the Mac - the bug still exists.

Updates of App's that are installed via iTunes DO NOT clear the badge count. Also, these are still listed as "Available Updates", but one can open the new version on the iPhone. Over-the-air updates work as expected.

I've had the problem before and can usually clear it with the delete/re-install. I'm very careful to not cross up phone updates with iTunes updates to avoid this, but there have been so many updates coming out with iOS 9(and I am on 9 with all fixes). You solution is the only one that worked this time. Thanks for the advice.
