I would suggest you have two options.
1. You can boot to Recovery Partition, install OS X on an external drive, boot to that drive instead of Macintosh HD using start up manager and from there you should be able to manually copy the files from Macintosh HD.
2. Depending on the age of your 'old' mac, you may be able to put it into target disk mode with your new mac and do the same process. I have linked the instructions for using Target Disk Mode here.
If you are not comfortable with following these steps alone I would suggest contacting apple support for assistance.
