I have the same question. I upgraded to IOS 8 last night and I have an iPad 2 3G (no gsm) with ATT and now it says "No Service" in the upper left hand corner and when I check the general settings > about, it says "Network Not Available" and "Cellular Data Number Unknown."

Apple employees do not necessarily read these posts. It is very important that you post feedback about this problem on the Apple Feedback site. If enough people complain directly to Apple, as opposed to using a forum like this (which is really a self help forum, and very useful to a point), then a solution to the 3G problem is likely to be issued sooner rather than later.

Please give Apple your feedback here:

I tried this and before I turned off the iCloud Drive service came back.

Here's what happened: When I selected ICloud Drive under the iCloud Settings my iPad2 searched for a data connection and didn't find one and continued to display No Service. I exited iCloud Drive menu and entered it again - this time it locked on to my AT&T data network. I left iCloud drive on just to continue to check this.

There is definitely an issue with iOS8. I know too many people with similar and different issues. And many say things are slower which I agree.

Hi again,

I'd like to share again my experience which is a possible fix (I'm on 3G for more than 14 hours now, which is a new record), and which is related to Bfreeman1969's post.

First of all here is my configuration of SIM Cards, and I feel that the problem is related somewhere with that:

1) One "Master" SIM Card in my iphone 5s

2) One "Slave" SIM Card in my iPad 2 (Vodafone Germany, it is called Ultracard)

3) I have the setting Settings --> Facetime --> iphone cellular calls enabled.

The Ultracard in the iPad is assigned to the same cell phone number as the master-SIM in the iPhone, that means any cell call is routed to both cards by the network provider simultanously. Strange thing happening: If someone calls me on my cell number, I found that the iPad is waking up for a few seconds (showing the lock screen and doing nothing else), then going to sleep again. Afterwards the ipad will show the missed call.

And no, the devices are not in the same WiFi Network, they are 5 km away from each other! I tested this putting the iphone in fligth mode next to the ipad, this thing is happening as well.

This made me disable the settings for iphone cell calls on my ipad (Settings--> Facetime --> iphone cellular calls set to disable)

Now the ipad is no longer waking up when someone calls me, and as a side effect, it remains on 3G and the problem with losing mobile data network seems to be solved.

I had this problem and noted that an answer on the forum suggested changing the language setting and when that was done reverting back to original language. I went into language and regions changed the language from English(UK) to English. 3g was restored, I then reversed the procedure from English to English (UK) and am using 3g on this message.

The bottom line is that we should not do all this after an upgrade.

Same problem in Germany, and if you make the mistake to use Apple for business, that is really bad. It is what it is: a lifestyle toy. I tried a full reverse of the iPad twice, but no result except two hours wasted working time, lost for my clients. The really bad thing is that Apple continues to advertise the (non-urgent) update to iOS 8 without the slightest warning that it might with some probability reduce the functionality of the device, although they know that it does. That is clearly gross negligence which makes them liable in many jurisdictions for any harm caused, disregarded what they write in their terms and conditions. Particularly enterprises should document their effort spent. It might be helfpful to sell your Apple shares before the courts do their judgements...

I also tried what several users have suggested: Switched my iPad from German to English and then back to German. That was ~24hrs ago, 3G Connection still up and running. Seems this workaround really does the trick (at least for some time).

Still this is very annoying and frustrating and definitely not a fix.

Also, my iPad is much slower on iOS 8 than it was on iOS 7. Some apps have become unusable that were fine on 7. Wish I could just go back...

This time Microsoft was the pioneer. When they changed their OS from 7 to 8 there was also not much of an improvement...

Some Good news: I have bern trying everyone's helpful suggestions to no avai. Finally got into the Genius Bar this morning and they changed my data card and did a complete restore. So far so good. I now need to connect to iTunes to reconfigure my profile & apps etc. Fingers crossed.

quick background: I experienced same issues as others on this forum. Post updates. Had new data card and was getting celluar coverage but no data connection. New card and portal info re installed by service provider via Apple seems to have restired service. I was getting no service messages too with first replacememy card.

will be interested to see if lag and freezing of apps disappears.

What is a "data card"? My iPad 2 only has a sim card for cellular connections to the internet. As far as I know, it don't have a data card that could be replaced.

What did your cellular service provider say about all this? Mine here in Germany made sure that I have the correct log-in information in Settings and then confirmed the problem is a software bug from Apple which only Apple can correct. I don't want to say too much, as one of my posts here has already been deleted... so I guess Apple does read this forum.

After having tried everything here my iPad is bricked. It has full 3G 'bars' can receive text messages but won't connect to the internet.

There are no Genius bar appointments available in the foreseeable future and I've had enough of all this now.

I've been buying Apple kit exclusively since 1987. I've owned literally dozens of Macs, a couple of iPhones, 3 or 4 iPods, always upgrading when the new stuff came out. This marks the end of all that.

I don't expect the rival hardware to be any better than my iPad, but I do expect it to be cheaper so I'll feel less bad about having to throw it away because sloppy software QA has written it off.

The ipad2 worked quite well with the most recent version of IOS7, and (to my opinion) even better with the older IOS6.

I should not have been so naive to blindly upgrade to IOS8 just because it was there. A lesson I will remember well for the future.

But in all its communication about IOS8, the new OS was glorified by Apple. Never did I hear or read a warning that owners of the iPad2 would be better off if they don't touch the forbidden fruit of the IOS8 upgrade.

Why does Apple not allow us to revert to older versions like IOS7 or IOS6? Is there a technical reason that makes this impossible or is this just stubborn company policy. Like many people, I get goosebumps when the word "company" and "policy" are used in the same sentence or even on the same page. A policy needs to be there to serve the customer, not the other way around.

I think there's an easy solution here. Time to act, Apple. Thank you.
