The new behavior of the bookmarks sidebar is frustrating me. I am hoping that someone knows a way to make the sidebar disappear in the landscape mode without tapping the bookmark icon again to close it. I don't see the logic in selecting a bookmark then having the sidebar stay open on 1/3 of the screen unless you manually close it. Please tell me there is a fix.

The answer is: Click the blue bookmarks icon on the top left. That will allow you to hide and show the sidebar.
I just experienced the same problem on my iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8.3
The Bookmarks Sidebar is not there in the portrait mode but appears in the landscape mode. After playing around a bit I finally discovered that the web page being viewed is scrolled downward a bit by default. By scrolling upward, a top bar appears across the whole screen that has a duplicate Bookmarks icon on it. It is this second Bookmarks icon and not the one at the top of the Sidebar that toggles the Sidebar off and on.

Tap the solid blue bookmark icon at the top of bookmarks to dismiss bookmarks.
Go to Settings > Safari then select Show Favorites Bar (turn on)... then you will be able hide the bookmark by pressing on the blue book in landscape mode.....amazing how dumb programmers can get by "uninventing the wheel"

I know clicking on the blue bookmark icon will close the bookmarks sidebar in landscape mode, but I would prefer it auto close after selecting a bookmark.
Using an iPad Pro and want to relish in the extra on-screen real estate!
OH, yes, frustration galore. Those IT gurus think they're helping with all their bright ideas but it's only thanks to our savvy and very kind fellow users that we know how to use them. When upgrades are put tgrough, Apple should have the courtesy - and decency - of letting us (the users who are not all tech savvy) know what changes they have created.

Sadly in iOS 8.1 beta there is still this post sjobs 0logic bug.
I did and no response. And now with IOS 8.02 it's still there.
Any update on this? You can hide it in OS X. Any way to hide it on the iPad?

I Have the same problem. Prior to ios8 the ssidebar would auto hide once you selected your bookmark, just as it does in portrait mode now
