Q: itunes will not backup my iphone 6

I backup my iphone 5 without a problem. Then I did a restore to my iphone 6... no problem.

Now I cannot backup the iphone 6 using iTunes. I get a general error message.

I then installed iTunes (X64) to my laptop. Same problem. General error message.

I reset my computer, rebooted my iphone. I cannot update to 8.0.2 (from 8.00) because when it unpacks the update, the automatic backup fails.

    Hi everyone,

just want to check that I am not going crazy as it seems apple are bent on sending me that way! So updated itunes recently and tried to update to new IOS8.1. Just like many of you are you all getting same issue of message says itunes cant back up iphone due to disconnected. Tried all the tricks, reinstall, restart, deleted back ups, but still same message. I know it is not my ports that are issue here as USB detects the phone and recognises it on P.Cit is even charging as we speak in the USB port at the front so no connection issue. Are we all in the same apple boat? I am very fed up to be honest and fast wondering how many hours of my life are wasted on apple software issues!!

Should mention that mine is a 4s and seems users regardless of iphone generation having trouble.

Looking for reassurance we are all in this together! lol

    Hi Alan,

Yes it is so annoying, I updated in the finish by using wifi/through the air so to speak and left itunes well alone. Do you reckon it is a software update needed for itunes or the actual phone needs updates again?

Also as a complete side note, I never bothered with the 5 I thought stick with the 4s and then go for the 6 as a Christmas treat, do you think the 6 plus is worth it and are you happy with it minus the bugs?

In response to Maria and Alan:

    I have 2 iPhones - my old 4S and a new iPhone 6.

My 4S wouldn't back up on iOS 8, so I reverted to iOS 7.1.2. It backs up so I'm sticking with 7.1.2 on the 4S and I'm not going to update it to iOS 8 again, even though I'm  running Yosemite and iTunes 12.

Not so much success with the iPhone 6 though. I was so looking forward to my new iPhone 6 but it's been a real disappointment. Even after updating to Yosemite, iTunes 12, and iOS 8.1, I still get a non-specific error message telling me the iPhone 6 can't be backed up to my computer.

So I'm still using the 4S and the bright shiny new iPhone 6 sits in its box like a lemon.

    I'm not happy.

HI Anna I didn't  mention I had also upgraded to Yosemite I'm wondering if that's where the problem lies I'm persavering with the 6 plus but will be even less impressed if a fix doesn't materialise soon and I loose data

I have just updated my iPhone 6 to iOS8.1 and confirmed that the error message is still there. The status on my iTunes is still "Your iPhone has never been backed up to this computer". Just wondering if there are other alternatives we can pursue to backup our data....:-(

I Had posted earlier on the new iPhone geting a backup error when syncing with computer.  I have updated iPhone to 8.1 and 12.xx iTunes and attempted to sync.  Still get non-specific backup error.   .   Must be something specific to iPhone 6 hardware, OS8.02, or OS8.1.   It still could be iTunes software if communication is different than iPad air.    Anyway I'm not very happy about not being able to back up.

If the soft ware communication is the same as iPad air, then it is a iPhone 6 hardware issue that may not be fixable by OS update.   I may want money back if the product is defective.  Apple is silent on whole issue....it is obviously a problem in looking at all of the people having same problem.

apple  why don't you weigh in and tell us what is going on???

Exactly....Apple should update users instead of having reps advise customers to do endless 'restore as new' procedures. Reps are advising customers to pursue solutions which are a clear waste of time...probably because Apple isn't updating their own agents as to an appropriate response. Apple customers are loyal and can endure anything except stupidity.

Everyone who has reported a problem should receive an email from Apple updating them on their progress (or lack of progress). Then the Genius Bars would not be clogged with customers who they cannot help.

I have same problem as everyone else....a new iPhone 6 Plus which does not backup to iCloud (or computer).

"ITunes could not back up the iPhone because the iPhone disconnected."

And after many days & a zillion failures -

"ITunes could not back up the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone.  Delete the backup for the iPhone, then try again."

So I restored as my Plus new only to yet again receive the first disconnect message. Endless cycle.

Your phone is defective. I struggled for a week trying to get  my Verizon iPhone 6 to backup to iTunes issues (app backup would crash iTunes) and the phone would randomly freeze, give a blue screen and reboot several time when clicking on apps like Facebook. I went to Verizon, who referred me to an Apple Store. The folks at Apple looked at the event log on the phone, and replaced it on the spot, no questions asked. The tech told me that several batches of the Iphone 6 Plus had these  same issues, though my IPhone 6 64gb was the first he had seen with bad hardware and/or corrupted hardware.  Save your frustration-go directly to an Apple Store and get a new phone

    Thanks, Rlindsaypa!!

But this is my 2nd Plus phone. I think the freeze & blue screen is a separate issue then the backup problem.

I've had this one 18 days.....without an iCloud backup.

Like others I kept waiting for an update which would resolve the problem. In absence of that, I'd just like an occasional email update from Apple saying.....we're still working on it. Just good customer service.

It certainly does seem as if Apple is hoping that if it ignores the problem long enough it will go away ...

So after another restore as new.....my Plus failed 4 times to backup to iCloud. The Plus failed to backup with only Apple's base apps loaded.

Gave up on backing up to iCloud and began backing up to computer.

I very slowly began to add apps to my Plus....backing up phone to computer after adding every few apps. When I received the usual 'disconnect message' I restored the last backup.

Interesting I received the 'disconnect message' after adding a single photo (one which I shot with my iPad Mini)  Deleted the photo...synced iphone and was able to again backup to computer.

Then I saved my ringtones to Plus and again the phone failed (disconnect message). Deleted the tones, synced and was able to backup. Some apps also triggered backup failure but I haven't yet ascertained which ones.  If anyone has a clue what this means, please advise.

I love my Plus....great phone....except for this serious problem.

I just got my 6 plus yesterday and a restore of my data from my 4S that I upgraded from. Everything went smoothly until I tried to do a backup after updating to 8.1 and iTunes 12. I'm so mad at myself as I should have researched and found this before I did the updates. Now I can't get my 6 plus to backup to cloud or my iMac. Everything else works but I get the same message iTunes will not backup my iPhone due to an error. I'd had to think that after waiting more than a month to get my upgrade in the mail that this is a defective unit. Who knows how long it would take to get a replacement 6 plus 64gb?
