Q: itunes will not backup my iphone 6

I backup my iphone 5 without a problem. Then I did a restore to my iphone 6... no problem.

Now I cannot backup the iphone 6 using iTunes. I get a general error message.

I then installed iTunes (X64) to my laptop. Same problem. General error message.

I reset my computer, rebooted my iphone. I cannot update to 8.0.2 (from 8.00) because when it unpacks the update, the automatic backup fails.

Your screenshot looks like Yosemite, is that right? We can see if we have anything useful in the log files.

Open Finder, and select the "Go" menu at the top of the screen. Hold the Option key, and select the "Library" menu option from the Go menu. (On OSX Lion and above, Library will only appear with the Option key held.)

From Library, navigate to Logs -> DeviceLink.

In that DeviceLink folder, hopefully you'll see a log file titled starting with "AppleMobileBackup" that's likely to be the most helpful log. There might be something of interest in there. Here's a glance at mine, so we can see what is semi-normal and because I believe in posting what I ask others to post.

    Hi,

I found a solution for my problem under another discussion called can't backup iPhone iOS 8.1.1.  The post came from Clairr.  Basically apple support found out that an app that had not updated in awhile was causing the problem and when the app was deleted the backup worked.  I went through and deleted older apps that have not updated since I installed iOS 8.1.1 and it worked!  I was able to backup again.  I don't know which app it was since I had about 5 that hadn't been updated.

    Hi,

After struggling with this issue + running all steps described by Apple with no success, the above reply did the job - i have deleted several old apps and then backup succeeded. Apparently one of the apps (cant say which) caused the problem.

    Thanks,

    Raanan

Apple seems to be having a LOT of problems. Their iWatch is not even as good as a poorly designed high school software project.,

Anyway, I have an iPhone 5S and my friend has the 6, both with the latest iTunes. Neither of us can select the manual Update selection. It is greyed out.

Frankly, I don't think they test their software with users, and the kiddies who work there developing updates to their software are clearly not interested in actually testing their work -- they've been told how perfect they are, how everyone gets a gold star even if they do a poor job. This is a sign of the times folks.

Now, you'd think Apple has enough money to actually hire competent software developers who realize they are NOT perfect, that they DO make MISTAKE, but oh no, apple employees must think they are superior beings and that we, as lowly "USERS" (said with a very sarcastic snide inflection) should like what they produce, and not complain.

Welcome to the plantation again, with the "Boss" man telling us what to do, what to like, how to behave, etc., Sounds like the liberal agenda to me.

Obviously this manual backup problem has been around for a long time, and still hasn't been fixed, and now they tell users not to upgrade to the latest iOS because they haven't fixed the problems.

I figure you cannot go back to an earlier, FUNCTIONAL version of iTunes, so I've gotten a program called "iExplorer" that works getting music off the iPhone, iPad, etc., can save all your text messages in separate PDF files for each conversation, can save your call list, and is far better than iTunes for backing up your iPhone, iPad contents.

My guess is that the folks who created iExplorer are either former Apple employees who grew tired of the teeny bopper mentality that seems to pervade the Apple developer group, or are just smarter than the Apple developers.  What do you think??

Hi, I happened to have the same problem and have finally solved now.

Under "General -> Usage", I found an app without a name (which was "Bloomberg Business").  I have already deleted this app previously, but I guess it appears again because the iTunes library imports the app into the iPhone again and causes this problem.

So the solution is to delete that no-name app under "Usage".

But if it appears again after you refresh the "Usage" page, go download the app again from app store.  Then you may find that the download/installation will not be completed.  You will then have to go to "Usage" and delete the app again, and there you go.

    Hope this helps.

I struggled with the same problem and this article proposed are working solution for me: http://osxdaily.com/2014/07/16/fix-a-itunes-could-not-backup-iphone-error-messag e/

In short summary: Quit iTunes, lookup your local iTunes backup files (OSX: ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MobileSync/Backup/), add a prefix name to the folder ("_ol"d or so), quit finder and restart iTunes and the backup process.
