Why does iOS 8.0.2 not resolve the issue of WiFi connectivity with iOS 8 and the new iPhone 6?

My iPhone 6 is still randomly disconnecting from my home WiFi, even after the latest OS update. My spouse also has an iPhone 6 and has experienced no issues with WiFi connectivity. When I spoke with Apple earlier in the week, I was told that they were aware of this issue with iOS 8 and would be working on a solution that should be released in 24 hours. I have a $700+ phone that doesn't stay connected to WiFi. Ridiculous. Apple really needs to get it together. This is the worst OS release yet.

My iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS8 started having trouble keeping the connection to WiFi networks. Also it does not always connect to known networks. I have to go to settings and tap on the network to connect. Also sometimes the phone shows the last network that it was connected to as available network although it certainly is out of the range of that network. So definitely some strange things are going on with the WiFi in my 5S. Only solution that helps me to use WiFi with my phone is to disable cellular data from the settings. That way it stays connected although the download speed is mostly half of that what I get from my laptop connected to the same network. I hope that the problems with WiFi are caused by iOS 8 not the phone, and that Apple fixes it soon.

Just appeared on Ars Technica a discussion of the low 8.0.x adoption rate -- several issues - but the one of interest here is a discussion with some numbers (not sure how accurate) of interest...

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/10/theres-more-than-one-reason-why-ios-8s-grow th-has-stalled/

"A buggy reputation

Speaking of widely disseminated reports, Apple caused a minor uproar soon after iOS 8's launch when version 8.0.1 completely broke cellular and TouchID support for many iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users. The actual number of devices affected was reportedly around 40,000, a drop in the bucket compared to the ten-million-plus devices sold. If you're a company trying to sell people on an upgrade, you absolutely do not want "iOS 8" and "phone-breaking update" together in the same sentence barely a week after release.

Apple fixed the problem the very next day in iOS 8.0.2, which as far as I can tell has not been particularly buggy when judged next to any other early X.0 release of iOS (traveling for a week in Japan with an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.0 was a uniquely terrible experience). But like the slowdown problem, this is one where perception is more important (and more damaging) than reality. Thanks to 8.0.1 and other, smaller reports of Wi-Fi problems, crashes, and Health and HealthKit oddities, iOS 8.0 has picked up a reputation for being buggy.

iOS 8.1, currently said to be launching later this month alongside new iPads and the Apple Pay service, will be Apple's first major opportunity to counter this perception. This is the first version of iOS 8 that can actually take real-world feedback into account, and Apple has already released two betas of the software in two weeks. There will always be edge cases, but hopefully the update smooths out the worst of the wrinkles.

We'll be keeping an eye on Apple's Developer Support graph to track iOS 8's growth—new data comes out every two weeks or so, and the next refresh will show us whether the last two weeks' slow growth was a bump in the road or a more serious problem. We're also planning a look at iOS 8.1 once the new version is release"

Found the problem last night - after getting a replacement iPhone 6 + 128Gb... and resetting it to factory settings via i-tunes before setting the phone up (manually - NOT updating from a backup) it still bumped me from my home wifi.

I was speaking to someone the other day and they suggested resetting my router to factory settings and starting over with that. Apparently a lot of routers will store mac addresses of devices on the system and on occasions these can conflict. long story short, i have a virgin 150mb connection, i use virgins router in modem mode and i use a NetGear Nighthawk R7000 router to handle my wit reception (that is always excellent - just not since having my 6 + in the hours)

Last night i restored my router to factor default - by holding in the reset button with a small screwdriver.... set my whole network up again, and its now been 16 hours without any problems. I am now using all my devices 5GHz channels, problem free and I've placed everything else on the 2.4GHz channels.... so far so good. I will do an update at the weekend if this quick fix continues to work🙂

It seems iOS 8 (8.0.2) on an iPhone 6 has significant WiFi connectivity problems. I have given phone permanent IP address, rebooted modem and router, reset network etc. doing all of the troubleshooting steps. No fix. The problem seems to be in Apple's iOS 8 algorithm. An iPhone 6 will drop connectivity as some sort of power-saving mode unless an Apple app needs connectivity. For instance, awaken the phone and connection is made only to be shortly dropped. No connection, open Weather app or App Store, iTunes Store etc. and connection is made. Apple really dropped the ball on this one. iOS 8 is not ready for prime time. I hope Apple knows this and fixes this ASAP. What do others think/know? Hello Apple, are you listening?

I Have been having every same issue you all, have been having. I cannot connect to my home wifi and having verizon, my apartment gets no cell sefvice, so I can not able to receive calls, but no data either, can't connect to wifi, makes my phone utterly Useless. everyone I was talking to to try to fix this issue kept referring me to someone else, verizon referred me to Internet provider, who referred me to apple, who referred me to modem...l it's no ones fault, but my iPhone isn't working!! Spent so much on this phone that doesn't work!

after messing around with my modem settings, I found that switching from 2.4 ghz to 5 ghz instantly solved my connectivity issues In my apartment (although the reach is drastically shorter and thus It won't rpeach my bedroom ).

Trying to solve all of these issues I easily went thru 90% of my data for the month with about a week left in my cycle.

today the wifi could not connect at two differentpublic locations with passwords, when my boyfriend could easily connect using the same password on his iphone 6. How is it that two iPhone 6 next to each other, one will connect the other wont? I get the "unable to join" or "incorrect password" screen, and his connects flawlessly. I don't appreciate using up all my data because of an apple issue. And now I had to turn my cellular data off for the rest of the week so I don't get charged data overuse charges by verizon. Thanks apple, this has been a frustrating ordeal.

the 5 ghz solved my home network issue but I can't change the settings at a friends house or a public place like a cafe, bar or restaurant! This is so annoying. And 5 ghz has such a small reach, no signal in my bedroom when my router really isn't that far away in the living room !

Not only that the WIFI bug seems to persist over two updates, the other bugs are not solved either or got even worse. I will never buy anything from apple ever again. I want to be able to choose my operating system and i want to be able to say which version i want to run too, for obvious reasons, that my old iPhone will never run as good on a new Operating System, that was designed for newer phones. And stop spamming us with your permanent requests to update our perfectly working systems with your untested updates or malicious malfunctions in disguise of an operating system.

I will not trust companies that are building their success on greed anymore. The only real alternative to those fowl tech-players i see now is Firefox OS and the hope that it will grow big and strong. Speaking from the bottom of my heart: "Let’s fight for our rights."

Just a quick snapshot of my chain of events. I’m currently on my fourth iPhone 6 Plus 64GB here in London, UK. Every time I have spoken to AppleCare and told them that I have gone through all the Wi-Fi troubleshooting methods possible they have asked me to get a brand new retail replacement as I’m within my 14 day return period. I’ve been experiencing the following issues:

  1. Wi-Fi disconnects and switches to 4G (Restart required for temp fix)
  2. Wi-Fi is still active but there is no traffic or activity– often when in sleep mode for long periods of time. (Toggle Wi-Fi on/off for temp fix)
  3. Wi-Fi disconnects and cannot find any networks (restart required for temp fix)
  4. This has been occurring on both iOS 8 and 8.0.2
  5. The issues are the same on both my 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks
  6. This is affecting my ip6+ and 5s (5s used to work perfect on ios7 on same networks) – My MBP-R and all other devices run perfectly on my network.

I spoke to AppleCare again yesterday and asked for their advice as its now my fourth iPhone in just under a month. This time they said that apple were fully aware of the Wi-Fi problem and that new repair tickets were not being raised for their engineers as they are already working hard to get this resolved. They also said they could see all the issues raised on the apple discussions boards which they usually don’t admit too! I asked what to do next and the advisor apologised and said this is clearly a software glitch and will be resolved in the next update. I asked for a timescale but unfortunately none was given.

As stated above I have tried all the troubleshooting methods discussed on forums and on tech websites but the only thing that gives me a stable connection without any disconnects (especially on my 6 plus) is turning cellular/mobile data off when I know I’m going to be on Wi-Fi for a sustained period of time (e.g. at home or work). I appreciate this is annoying but it’s the best temp fix until an update comes out.

Hope it helps everyone who is having issues with their devices that have cellular functionality.

Any comments welcome

I'm having similar issues with my iPhone 6.

I keep restarting my phone and it will work for a little while but then it goes right back to this:

1. Disconnecting from my router at random moments.

2. Won't "find" any access points even though I'm right in front of my router and my other devices are connecting.

3. When I attempt to connect to any Wifi source it seems to be searching and searching but that's all it does.

I'm also having issues with LTE where it is extremely slow. There's no case on my phone when doing these tests to find a solution. I've restarted my router several times as well, by the way. The main issue I have with my Wifi connection is that several times I didn't realize my iPhone had disconnected from my Wifi and I was on LTE the whole time which in turn caused me to use up quite a bit of my data plan. Not cool!!! I've had overages that I am being charged for as a result of this issue. Needs to be fixed!!!

Just food for thought. I took my iPhone 6 back for a refund after 7 days of ****. I wanted to love it but with all of the issues I went back to my old faithful iphone 5 with no issues as of yet. I turned off my auto updates because I will never update again until I see the coast is clear. I am so happy I did not trade my phone in.

I Know I will get a new phone again. But in all truth I was not comfortable with the new size as well.

So my answer is put that pretty new phone back in its box and use a 5 till everything is fixed.

Apple should switch the phone service for free until they get their ISSUES resolved.

Update:

I had been having the problem with WiFi on my iPhone 6 as well, and have been following this thread for the last 3 weeks or so. I had tried everything mentioned in this thread, except for a executing a complete restore. In my particular case, I missed the 8.0.1 update, and went straight from 8.0 to 8.0.2, with the WiFi problems having been present the entire time. I didn't think much about restoring, primarily because of the posts in this thread and others that basically said it was useless. However, I finally broke down on Friday and did a complete restore. I downloaded 8.0.2 straight to iTunes on my computer prior to the restore. I'm not sure if bypassing the original 8.0 that came on my phone made a difference in my particular case or not, but I've been problem free for roughly 67 hours or so.

That's interesting. I am afraid to restore. I was one of the unlucky (stupid?) ones who upgraded to 8.0.1. When I worked with Apple to "fix" restore the iPhone 6, it froze and I had to return it. I am afraid to restore until I have more confidence.

Anyone else able to fix this connectivity problem by restoring? Please let us know.

Why does iOS 8.0.2 not resolve the issue of WiFi connectivity with iOS 8 and the new iPhone 6?
