iPhone 6 iCloud Safari Sync Drains Battery

Turning on Safari sync in iCloud settings on iPhone 6 causes constant Safari usage and massive battery drain on new iPhone 6 with ios8.

Windows 7 PC with previous and new version of iCloud control panel synching Chrome and IE bookmarks. Macs, iPads also sync iCloud Safari.

I had used this setup for a very long time on iPhone 5s with ios7 and did not notice battery issues.

Now that I can see battery usage by app in ios8, I saw that Safari was consuming 40% of the battery usage even though safari was not running. Background app refresh was off and location services were at bare minimum. This went on for days of getting only a few hours after each charge until I realized the only thing Safari might be doing in the background was synching iCloud.

That was the issue. Now, with iCloud safari sync off, Safari does not even register 1% at all and battery lasts all day.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I will leave it off until addressed by Apple, but this is a problem.

I am seeing the exact same problem. Never had this issue before, and then around the same time frame you indicated my usage time started to tick up constantly, causing continuous battery drain. I have gone to the Genius Bar twice. The first visit they had be wipe the device and restore it with a clean OS and firmware file there to eliminate a software issue. After wiping the phone and signing in to iCloud, the same thing started again. On my second visit they replaced the phone to see if it was a hardware issue, but the new phone is the same. Not sure if I should waste my time going back to the Genius Bar again. I hope more people are reporting this beside from you and they find the cause.

I am glad to see that I am not alone. I have spoken to AppleCare, have gone into the store and the case was escalated to engineering. I was told 24-48 turnaround time however it has been double that and I am being asked to be patient. My patience is growing thin. It looks like all apple cares about now is how many devices they sell and do not care if an individual customer has an issue. This has .mac fiasco written all over it.

please keep me posted if there is anything that you figure out fixes the issue.

Changed my password, and it seems that may have done the trick for me as well. I will see how it behaves after a normal day of usage tomorrow. Thanks for posting this solution! Did Apple give any explanation as to how and why this problem started or why the password update fixes it? I assume not, but it would be nice to know how to avoid this happening again.

MMy problem came back again today for some unknow reason and then after loging out and logging back in it mysteriously disappeared. I am still observing to see what happens. I have spoken to Apple extensively about my issue and have also pointed them to this forum and mentioned your issue as it was identical to mine. Apple is VERY interested in this and have asked me to suggest that you call in to 1-800-MY-APPLE and give them this case number 739627711 and you will be escalated to the team I'm working in as they are very interested in your story as well.

I'm curious if you had any additional glitches on your device? Also what device are you using? I am on iPhone 6

look forward to hearing back on your experience.

i have some additional info on the issue. After I reset my password last night the issue went away. This afternoon I went to my other Apple devices to log into iCloud. I logged into my iCloud on my Apple TV which was running version 7.0.2 and the issue reappeared. I did not associate it with Apple TV iCloud log in initially. When I thought back I decided to log out from Apple TV iCloud and the issue went away. I then went to check whether there was an update for Apple TV software and sure enough there was 7.0.3 available. I upgraded and logged back into Apple TV iCloud and had no issue. Don't ask me why I went down this pathway but it worked. I'm just curious if you have an Apple TV and whether you are currently running 7.0.2 on it. 7.0.3 came out a few days ago and one of the issues it addressed as listed in Apple article is

Apple TV 7.0.3

Apple TVAvailable for: Apple TV 3rd generation and laterImpact: A maliciously crafted afc command may allow access to protected parts of the filesystemDescription: A vulnerability existed in the symbolic linking mechanism of afc. This issue was addressed by adding additional path checks.

WOuld love love to hear your feedback and experience.

This is very interesting to know.

I just got an IPhone 6 Plus two days ago and just can't believe how super-fast the battery drains out with only moderate use over just several hours.

Well. Now I know why.

iCloud.

I really do hope that Apple fixes this problem.

The following is a re-print of a post I made in another thread. Thought you all might like to check it out:

I just got an IPhone 6 Plus a couple of days ago. I made it a point to get the Plus version instead of the regular 6 version due to all the talk about how the battery on the Plus lasts for days before needing to be recharged. That was the main thing for me. Battery life. My previous IPhones over the years, had really horrible battery life to the point where I went through a period of not using any smartphone at all for a couple years because I was so fed up with the battery constantly draining like crazy.

So anyway, I was really looking forward to the IPhone 6 Plus after hearing all about it. After I bought it, I charged it to a full 100 percent and after a course of using it off and on for about six hours (browsing the internet - mostly the Steam forums, and watching a few YouTube video's), the battery had drained all the way down to 40 percent.

From 100 to 40 percent in just six hours.

6 hours.

Huh? What? Are you kidding me?

You got to be kidding me. What in the **** is this? Your telling me, that just browsing the Steam forums and watching a few YouTube video's off and on for six hours (that's off and on. Not six hours non-stop straight), that drained the battery 60 percent?

I can't believe this. This is supposed to be the all high and mighty super powered IPhone 6 Plus battery were talking about here. I still can't believe it.

I will say this however, in "sleep" mode, it's absolutely incredible. The battery never drains if I don't use the phone at all.

It's only when I DO use it that the battery runs down real fast.

I only installed two apps on my IPhone. The Starbucks and Wells Fargo apps.

But yeah after reading this thread and another one talking about how the iCloud is responsible for running the battery into the **** ground, I went ahead and just turned off / disabled everything: Push, iCloud, etc, to see if that helps any. (haven't tested it out yet as I'm currently re-charging my IPhone again).

But I shouldn't even have to do this. We shouldn't even have to do this.

By right we should be able to keep every feature turned ON and always up and running and still get great battery life because this is how the Plus version was advertised to us.

Another thing I don't like is how the IPhone will only charge while it's on. No matter if I completely and totally turn off my IPhone BEFORE I plug it into the charger, as soon as I plug it in, it automatically powers itself back on again. At first I thought that I was doing something wrong which caused this to happen. But after looking around on the internet, I learned that Apple designed it to be this way. That it is to be and remain on even when charging.

However, aside from the battery problem / issue, I absolutely LOVE the IPhone 6 Plus. I love IPhones in general. At one point I tried Android and I found the IPhone to be far superior. I will be IPhone exclusive from here on out.

Hello,

we are facing the same issue as you described... The issue began around 3 weeks ago on the iphone 5 of my wife. we are using the same iCloud. Her iphone is draining like a countdown, you can watch the % of the battery going down. one week later, I noticed the same behavior on my business iphone 5, which is also connected to the iCloud. another week later, my private iphone 6 became the same behavior, but not that fast, as the 5.

restore, reset, iOS reload via dfu etc... nothing helped. So we went yesterday to the genius bar. Wonderfull, they checked the battery, everything in green area. they didn't believe, what we told them. the good thing was, during the discussion, the battery on all three phones went down as described. So they exchanged my iphone 6, as it still has warranty. the phone of my wife was reset and loaded with their image of iOS 8.4. We started to reconfigure our phones and the new iphone 6 and the reset iphone 5 started directly to get the same behavior as before...

I tried to identify the point, which all three phones having together... iCloud!

then i tried to find articles in the internet... not that much, but some, as this thread!

So i began to change the apple id password to see, if something is happening for us. But, unfortunately, it did not change anything. Battery is still draining like ****. We have disabled Safari ... same...

As we are syncing tasks, calendar, contacts and photos via iCloud, it would hurt us very much to deactivate the complete iCloud... does anyone have some new information how to solve the issue? or at least a working workaround?

Thanks,

Michael
