Can I use family sharing without a credit card

I want to set up family sharing in iCloud between my account and my dad's since we have separate accounts. Problem is, one of them needs a credit card and my sister tends to make purchases from iTunes cards that weren't for her. Can I set up family sharing without using a credit card? I have a friend who used his parents credit card and one day, they got a $500 bill from iTunes on purchases they didn't make. The account was hacked somehow and the last thing my parents need is to have one of their cards hijacked again.

It isn't legal. It's choice. A credit card in no way proves age. It's easy to get a credit card as a minor. Your argument is incorrect.

Read please. The minor does not enter the card. The parent or guardian does, as a way of complying with COPPA.

As to COPPA's reach around the world... the following language is in the COPPA.

While COPPA is an American law, the Federal Trade Commission has made it clear that the requirements of COPPA will apply to foreign-operated web sites if such sites "are directed to children in the U.S. or knowingly collect information from children in the U.S."[25]

Since the law is U.S. federal, it's applicable only to websites that are run:[1][9]

  • by websites under U.S. jurisdiction;
  • by websites which are hosted on servers in the U.S.;
  • by websites with owners headquartered in U.S. territory; or
  • by commercial websites.

In response to the original post, a credit card is needed to create the family sharing account. All the purchases are linked to that card but you could in theory set up "ask to buy" for everyone listed not a spouse or parent on the account. Then the cardholder(s) would get notifications that would either be able to approve or decline purchases made on their card. I have it set up for my family and it works great. Even free apps my kids want to download come thru as a request to me.

Dear Apple... it's not right to trick people into putting their credit card information. I can understand you need to verify that I am an adult when creating a child's apple id. But it said clearly that I could change back the payment method after. Now that I have family sharing it doesn't let me remove the credit card. This is annoying and stupid. I was perfectly fine before using iTunes store credit.

I'd say they want to trick people into buying more.

Of all the absurd things I read here... this is perhaps the most absurdest.

Your suggestion is that a feature designed to allow up to 6 Apple users to share a single purchase is actually a cleverly disguised attempt to "trick" those same users into making more purchases. Is that right?

The law is just a means for them to justify their real intentions.

The law has nothing to do with purchases. Zero. Nada. The law is about governing children's access to an online service. It is also only related to creating an Apple ID for a child and has nothing to do with Family Sharing.

It took you 7 months to come up with this reply?

I, too, do not want to put my cc since I don't want any unnecessary purchases made by my younger brothers. I use iTunes cards to reload. Have spent over 2,000 usd using this system.

Then you need a different mechanism to keep your brothers from abusing your credit.

Family Sharing will not resolve the challenge you have. They will have to finance their own purchases.
