When I go into Faces, it no longer shows the thumbnails of the faces. If i switch the toggle at the top to show the whole picture it shows the whole picture but if I switch it to show the face the pictures are just black. Also, on the screen where you have all the folders of the different faces, they're all just black and they have hundreds of photos in the folders...? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks
backup your iPhoto library and hole down the option and command keys while launching iPhoto until the first aid window appears - rebuild thumbnails

Yes as long as the iPhoto library is being backed up - if iPhoto is running TM does not backup up the library and if it is on external drive you need to verify that the EHD is being backed up
