I only have the free 5 GB for icloud and it says that the storage is nearly full! What would cause it to be full when I don't have any docs stored there- only photostream which I thought was not counted in the cloud storage

iCloud backs up the Photos stored on your device. If you have a lot of photos this could cause your backup to be pretty large.

Your iOS device backup only includes data and settings stored on your device. It doesn’t include data already stored in iCloud, for example contacts, calendars, bookmarks, mail messages, notes, shared photo streams, My Photo Stream, and documents you save in iCloud using iOS apps and Mac apps.
By selecting the device backup (in Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage) you can see how much each item in your backup is using.
Thx for the help- but now what? Do I delete photos to gain back more of the cloud space?
It is never a good idea to have the only copy of your photos/videos on your phone.
I recommend you transfer them to your computer to be backed up.

ok thx again! I imported the photos but on my manage storage section it still says I only have 480 MB of 5.0 GB available. Wouldn't the import and deleting the photos from my iphone have taken care of the storage issue? ( although when I check my photos they are still there!)
also when I click on my iphone it says ' latest backup was never' (!?) The backup size is 2.7 GB- should I backup to my PC and will that free up the cloud space?
No. All those photos are still in the backup.
Back up again then check.
Settings > iCloud > Backup > Back Up Now
Start fresh.
Delete the old backup and then back up manually.
In addition I like to backup to iTunes once in a while too.

I would back up to both just to be safe.

To delete the old iCloud backup:
SEttings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage > select your backup > Delete Backup
backed up in itunes but on phone the backup options is just spinning... no choice to delete old backup
If you did not have iCloud backup turned on then what is using your iCloud storage? (Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage)
Are you confusing iCloud storage with local storage on the device?
What were you trying to do when you were notified about being low on storage space? Trying to update?
