Not having any problems. No crashes.

Hold down the option and command keys when you launch and them delete preferences.

No clue what the Option key is..

Generally fed, up so much work lost, and this has just started, it used to work ok till the last update...

No clue what the Option key is..

It is the one marked "alt", sometimes referred to as the alt key. For us longtime mac users this has been and always will be called the "option" key, as it was since the very first mac. (Says he, sighing, realizing he must be old, since he remembers using a Mac 128K :-))

Corrupt preferences can cause all sorts of trouble. Follow Russ's advice to clear your preferences and see if the problem is solved. Let us know.

    Hi Luis

Thank you for your very quick response and for teaching me the Option key...

I managed to delete preferences, using alt/command, and tried again... this time it was indeed better, as it didnt wait half an hour or so, it crashed after about 10 mins, once again, forcing the computer to do a restart..

One good thing, this time it saved the work already done... and Im grateful for that.  But so far a 30 second trailer has taken me almost 3 days...

    Any tips?

Tried again, this time the whole thing crashed on opening FCP..

I will post a section of the message generated to Apple, someone may be clever enough to know what it all means, I certainly dont...

I don't have you ever wrote the specs of your mac, nor the versions of OS and FCP X.

You may or may not have a hardware problem - like bad ram. If so, you should probably take your mac to an authorized repair shop.

But before you do, there are a few things you may want to try.

Try creating a brand new user with admin privileges, and run FCP X from that user account. If it works, then you'll know it is something in your own account that is causing trouble. If it crashes, you may trying installing a fresh copy of the OS and FCP X and see if that works.

I haven't upgraded to 10.9.5 for fear of this. I'm in the middle of a project.

Does OS X have something like the Windows feature that takes a snapshot of your system that you can revert to after installing a buggy update, bad driver, etc? Always envied that feature of Windows.

Being in the middle of a project is the most valid reason I have heard of to postpone an update or upgrade.

They should never be done at a time when you are under stress from other things.

No. Mac OS X has never implement a feature like that. The closest thing I know of to that is to create a bootable clone. Personally I prefer that solution to the solution that Windows has.

I use both a Time Machine and a bootable clone to backup my data and system on my Mac.

I use Time Machine and have used it now and then to get a version of the file I accidentally saved after making changes I didn't want.

You know, I used to have a really large drive with my system/apps/projects all on it and cloning was a pain. Now I have a new Mac Pro and I have a 512 gig Flash drive inside that has the system and apps. I could clone to a cheap 2 TB drive I own quickly and restoring would be quick too since all the projects are on an external. Thanks for the idea!
