iPhone 6 Touch ID Not Working

Hi all,

I just got my iPhone 6 with 64GB in Space Gray about a week ago. I had issues with getting my thumb or index finger to recognize with the print sensor. However, it did work and I thought I was on my way. Unfortunately, it does not seem to work now except in like one spot if I put my right thumb on the very edge of the sensor...weirdest thing. When I tried to redo the sensor and the recognition, it didn't let me do it. Now, I have pretty dry skin and honestly you can't see the fingerprint on my finger with the naked eye very easily.

I didn't know if anyone else had a similar issue and if anyone knew how to resolve. It's not a big issue, since I still use the 4 digit passcode, but its kind of a bummer. And yes, I have tried restarting and all the other simple things.

Thank you!

iPhone 6, iOS 8

Hello aswimmingapplegeek,

Congrats on getting the new iPhone 6. If you are having issues with Touch ID, then check out the article below to troubleshooting and resolve the issue.

Using Touch ID on iPhone

Resolving issues with Touch ID

  1. Make sure that you're using the latest version of iOS.
  2. Make sure that your fingers and the Home button are clean and dry.*
  3. Cover the Home button completely. Don't tap too quickly, don't press down hard, and don't move your finger while Touch ID is scanning. Make sure that your finger touches the metal ring around the Home button.
  4. If you're using a protective case or screen protector, it must leave the Home button and the surrounding ring completely unobscured. If it doesn't, remove the case or screen protector and try again.
  5. Tap Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and verify that:
    • iPhone Unlock or iTunes & App Store is on.
    • You enrolled one or more fingerprints.
  6. Try enrolling a different finger.
  7. If you can't enroll any of your fingers, take your iPhone to an Apple Retail Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider, or contact AppleCare for further assistance.

* Moisture, lotions, sweat, oils, cuts, or dry skin might affect fingerprint recognition. Certain activities can also temporarily affect fingerprint recognition, including exercising, showering, swimming, cooking, or other conditions or changes that affect your fingerprint.

In our case, we get in the 2 phones (6 and 6 plus) constantly a message saying: "Cover Home Button Completely - Try to cover the entire Home button with your finger". I can click OK cover the button completely and the message will come back. It looks like a software issue, a loop in the call for this message interrupts the initial recording of the finger prints; so I don't have the touch id at all. The second phone a 6 Plus only starts recording the prints if I press lightly the home button which points also to a hardware problem, but soon after that the message comes up and interrupts the process. I think we need to consider returning both phones.
