my internal mic does work - i've checked it in Photo Booth but it doesn't work in garageband
i've gone to general and garage band preferences and selected the correct options but i'm not getting any level
when i start recording i get a box saying 'no input selected'
any ideas?

Which GarageBand version are you using?
In GarageBand 10.0 you select the input for a track in the Info panel of the Smart Controls for the track, when the track is selected.
If you do not see the Recording Controls, enlarge the Smart Controls panel by dragging the dividing line to the Track Area upward.
