iBooks is 'crashing since upgrade to iOS 8 on the iPad 2 (2011)

Updated iPad2(2011) to iOS8. Now iBooks crashes while reading a book and closes down. I have sync'd the iPad a few times but nothing changes and it will 'crash' every 5-10 minutes. What is going on?

iPad 2, iOS 8

Hi Jason H,

So far the only thing that has helped has been to put the iPad into flight mode when I want to use iBooks.

I have done all the things mentioned in the link you provided except reinstalling iBooks. With the update to iOS 8 I have not activated iCloud Drive, (since been advised not to do that until the next Mac OS update in three weeks). I am backed up to my iMac but I would hate to lose the 300+ books that are stored on the App.

If I can be reassured I would not lose the iBooks' 'data' if I were to reinstall iBooks I could try that.

Since the problem has ONLY occurred since the update to iOS 8 on the iPad, and it has been widely reported as a problem since the upgrade, I am not convinced the problem is the App.

Could you explain why reinstalling iBooks would correct the problem.

I am assuming the reason the iBooks now works with the iPad in flight mode is that the problem is to do with some interference that is happening with the relationship the iPad and iOS 8 is now having with the 3G Data Sim card.

Thanks

I have been having the iBooks crashing problem in iOS 8.x since I installed it on my iPad Air. I tried bunches of different things but it would only work without crashing in Airplane mode.

Today I did a complete restore via iTunes and set it up as a new iPad. I did not restore my backup to it. I simply set it to sync all my books, music, apps and photos in iTunes and when it finished syncing iBooks is no longer crashing on me.

I don’t know if this will work for everyone/anyone else. I’m also using Yosemite and iTunes 12, so that might also make a difference.

If the iBooks app is corrupted in some way, then the way to get a good copy reinstalled would be to reset your iPad ti its factory default setup, by using the iTunes program on your computer. Be sure to do your backups.

A better solution. This worked for me and several others, from a post from MrsMike921 in the following thread:

go to your settings, and first go to Safari and delete your history by scrolling down to "clear history and website data". Then go to the advanced settings and select ""website data". It should show 0 bytes. If not, clear again.

next go to iTunes and App Store in settings, and touch your Apple ID, the select sign out.

AFter you you sign out of your ID, restart your iPad by holding down the power button and home key simultaneously until you see the apple logo after the restart.

when you are powered up, go to iBooks. You should get a message that you need to sign in to sync up your books. Sign in, and that should do it.
