Q: Replaced 4 GB with 8 GB and still slow with OSX 10.9.5

I have an early 2011 Mac Book Pro, with OSX 10.9.5.  Was very slow in boot up and especially with Microsoft Office applications.  I replaced the 4GB memory with 8 GB.  This does not seem to have helped.  Any suggestions?

Since boot speed is largely a function of drive speed rather than available RAM, I'd suggest first making sure your HD is working properly (assuming it used to be fast but it isn't now) by booting into Recovery mode and using Disk Utility to check your HD. If it's OK, consider replacing the HD with an SSD, which can offer a remarkable improvement in drive speed. Check out OWC offerings and installation videos.

Sluggishness can be caused by failing hardware or by third-party software (usually extensions that load at startup). It's usually one or the other. If you would, download, unzip and run EtreCheck and post the results here. That way we can see what startup items may be responsible for the slow-down, if any. Sluggishness can also be a sign that your hard drive is failing but we'll look at that after looking at your startup items.
