Q: pull video from DVD then re-edit then DVD Studio Pro

One of my clients gave me hard drive and the files are not organized. Can't find videos and menus. Previous freelancer did not do good job. I just wonder if it is good idea to pull video from DVD then encode it and re-create DVD production. I just want to make sure if it is good idea.

Whether or not it's a good idea depends on how much quality loss you and your client find acceptable.  Converting from DVD and then re-compressing for another DVD will take its toll on quality.  If you do choose to do this, use MPEG Streamclip (freeware) to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format that will match your FCP Sequence settings.

Otherwise, use the original files if at all possible.

If you don't need to edit the video, you can de-mux the video and audio in mpegstreamclip and use the m2v (video) and ac3 (audio) files to reauthor the dvd in dvdsp without any quality loss.  You'll have to recreate menus and navigation.
