Q: Unable to backup iPad using iTunes

I have spent the last three days trying to backup my iPad 3 running iOS 8 GM with no success. I have updated Mountain Lion to the latest version and I have updated iTunes to the latest version. I have deleted my old backups from the Library folder. I have rebooted both my Mac and my iPad any number of times. I have replaced the USB lead and plugged it into a different USB port. When asked if I would like to backup apps from iPad which are not in my iTunes Library I have tried both "Back Up Apps" and "Don't Back Up Apps". I have tried every combination of everything and still get the same message "iTunes could not back up the iPad "xxx" because the iPad disconnected".

I have searched the web endlessly and tried every suggestion and am now at my wits end. I would like to move from the Gold Master of iOS 8 to v8.0.2 as I got a warning this morning that I have only 7 days to do so.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hello gortdromagh,

The article linked below details a number of additional troubleshooting steps that can help stabilize your iPad's connection to your Mac.

I'm having a similar problem; I've tried all of the USB-related steps - but my problem also occurs with WiFi sync to my computer, and (as far as I can tell) attempts to back up to iCloud as well.

The one interesting data point that I haven't seen elsewhere is a log file called ExcResource_backupd_2014-10-12-171628 reflecting the time of the last attempt to back up to iCloud.  An entry in this file implies that the backupd died (or at least logged an exception) that CPU was "Observed 54% over 180 secs" "(Limit 50%)".  This implies to me that there might be an issue with IOS 8 where the backup process is using more CPU than IOS allows - does it seem plausible that this could be an issue with a USB or WiFi backup as well?  (I'm not the first to point out the perception that IOS 8 seems a bit overwhelming for the iPad 2 hardware.)

(Hmm, now I wonder whether if I start using the thing for other tasks whether that will drive backupd down under 50% long enough to finish a backup?)
