Tom is a major contributor on here and a big help with these issues.

For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for one possible solution read How to install adware.
Blocking popup windows in Safari and ad blocker extensions can be useful, but they are often ineffective defenses for this particular threat.
