Scatter Chart

Hi,

I am looking at scores children have scored in a recent test. I would like to show their result on a scatter chart (I think this would be my best option), where I could show which child has scored over the pass 'line' and below the pass 'line' - and thus easily showing which children need to receive extra targeted support. On Excel I could do a chart, and label each data symbol or point with the child's name. Without this ability the chart is useless as it is merely a scatter of points! Can this be accomplished in Numbers?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Gwen,

Create a table where:

1) the first row is a header row

2) the first column is a header column AND contains the student names

3) the second column contains the pass grade

4) the third column contains the student grades

now select the the second and third columns of the table

select the menu item "Insert > Chart > 2D 2-Axis"

now single click the chart and open the "Axis Formatter":

Select the "Value (Y1)" segment to allow you to alter the range of the Y-value for the bar chart. Change the "Max" scale to 100

Thank you so much for such a detailed answer - and a perfect answer for me. Looks great and is very clear. Thanks. As a matter of interest - has the ability to right click 'Convert to header' gone in the new version of Numbers? I couldn't seem to convert the name column to a 'header'. It wasn't a problem - a merely created a new table - but wondering am I missing something - or has it gone. Anyway - thanks very much Wayne for such a great answer.

Gwen,

So far as I know the contextual menus still include the "convert to header" option. The only reasons I know for this option not being in a menu are:

1) the row (or column) is already a header

2) you already have the max limit of headers (5)

3) the document is a csv imported file

Trying a screen shot (Screen Shots don't always work):

Click on the Row label (2) to see a contextual Menu with 'Convert to Header Row'

Hi Wayne, Sorry to bring up an old thread. Just wondering - is it possible to create a chart with two pass lines? In addition to the pass mark that I entered to create that great chart solution, there is a higher threshold pass mark - a line where the high achievers pass. It would be nice to be able to highlight these on the same chart rather than create a separate chart altogether - which I suppose will be the only option. Thanks and sorry to drag up to solved question.
