Q: IPHONE 6 This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably

I have the IPhone 6.  Bought it last Saturday,Just updated it to the newest 8.0.2 software Friday Sept 26th. No Problems until today, Monday Sept. 29th when Im getting this error .

It started this afternoon and, no i did not and do not have it plugged in. It was charged this morning and was at 57% battery this afternoon when the problem started.

Now I get this messege that keeps poping up over and over "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iphone"

It keeps popping up and i dont have ANYTHING plugged into it.

I called Verizon because thats who i bought it from who put me thru second line for help.

After a bunch of BS and telling me that they have had problems with chargers because of the amplified voltage and wrong plug being sent out  which sounds like bull to me because he said the new iphones have a different head on the plug, not the phone side but the end that has the usb connection and goes to the ac outlet, which dont make a lot of sense when you can also plug them into a usb port. I looked at different iphone plugs from the 4s, the 5 and the 6,and they all show the same input and output voltages and amps. Basically nothing that has to do with my problem i am having

Anyway at this point now they are saying something may have happened with the new software when i  download it last friday.

So now they had me backup my phone to itunes, and restore the iphone from itunes.

When you do this, itunes will automatically download the new version software, which seems to be taking a long time to download.

I will try to post results later to see if this works......

iPhone 6, iOS 8, software 8.0.2

I also have the same problem as you and that was also after upgrading to the latest iOS on my iPhone 6. In my case the iPhone 6 could not charge when it was plugged in. I thought that was odd because it worked before. And so began my investigation. Because I also had my old iPhone 5, I plugged the iPhone 6 charger into my iPhone 5 it was charging. My first thought was the new iPhone 6 is broken. Then I decided to use the iPhone 5 charger to charge the iPhone 6 to see what would happen. Interestingly it was charging. Then I decided to swap the cable around. And now I am using an iPhone 6 charger with an iPhone 5 cable to charge my iPhone 6. And using an iPhone 5 charger with a iPhone 6 cable to charge my iPhone 5.

Weird, I shouldn't need to do this since all my cables are original from Apple. I think that Apple has stuffed it up in the latest iOS upgrade. They are trying to be too smart.

Check the lightning port for pocket lint or other debris.

Same problem here. I just bought an iPhone 6 directly from an Apple store six hours ago. The only time I don't get the "This cable .... may not work properly" warning is when I have the cable that came with the phone plugged into the phone. ... And, yes, I looked for "pocket lint" and found none.

My 128 gig iPhone 6+ was having the same problems. I had it for two days and took it to the Apple Store. They replaced it on the spot. Here is a copy of the notes the tech wrote on my receipt.

"issue: The dock on the device doesn't read most accessories of apple. And the device takes a long time to charge

Steps to Reproduce: I ran multimeter test and the device is having dock issue.

The multimeter test read .09 and .03 at 65% charge.

Cosmetic Condition: No damage to the device

    Proposed Resolution: Replace under warranty"

So, when you use the Apple-approved & provided cable, you do not get this error message.  Does this mean when you're using a non-Apple approved cable, you do get the message?

That is correct. Everything that affects apples profit margin has been disabled.

Everything that could cause a higher than acceptable risk of your phone catching fire has been disabled.

Apple resolved my problem: I had the same problem, as I described in an earlier post. I had just bought an iPhone 6 directly from an Apple store and was getting the "This cable .... may not work properly" warning straight out of the box. Apple online assistance walked me through the scripted troubleshooting steps and determined there was a hardware failure. Apple shipped me a replacement iPhone within days. Considering the millions of iPhone 6's that have been manufactured, it's understandable that a small percentage will have hardware problems, just like any other mass-produced item.

And where in the terms and conditions of the warranty of your iPhone does it authorize you to use a non-Apple approved charger?

It's a safety and reliability issue.  I can't tell you the number of times I've seen an iPhone that has been damaged by an non-approved charger.

The actual profit margins at risk are not Apple's, but the manufacturers of these unauthorized chargers.  They build a charger out of inferior materials for about 50 cents in parts & labor, and then mark it up to $5.  I wish I could sell something for a 900% profit margin.  And when that accessory damages your iPhone, they'll refer you to the documentation that states they are not responsible for anything other than the charger, and not responsible for any damage to the device.

Did you know that Apple previously even offered to let customers exchange counterfeit USB adapters for real Apple USB adapters, only requiring about half of the normal cost of the charger ($10 instead of $19)?  [https://www.apple.com/support/usbadapter-takeback/]

And those chargers normally cost $19: [http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD810LL/A/apple-5w-usb-power-adapter]

So, even if it only cost $0.01 for Apple to manufacturer those (and it costs a lot more than that, actually), then Apple was giving up 47% of their profit margin on those charger, plus paying the costs to properly recycle the counterfeit ones.

In other words, Apple said: "Hey, even though you bought a counterfeit charger, and you didn't buy it from us, you can exchange that counterfeit charger for a real one and get $9 off the cost of that official charger".

Yeah.  That really sounds like Apple is only caring about their profit margin, when they let you bring in a fake charger and turn it in as if it were a $9 off coupon for a real charger.

    I think I FOUND A SOLUTION!

for me at least. I don't know about those brand new phones.

I was frustrated as all GET OUT about this exact problem, and that's what brought me here.

It was popping up every 1/5/10 minutes!

But after reading everything here. I looked really closely at the inside of the port of my phone, and there was a bit of lint/gunk down there. It's so hard to see unless you have the phone AND LIGHT SOURCE at JUST the right angle.

I'd advise using a piece of wood or non-conductive material, but I just turned my phone off and then used a very pointy tipped x-acto knife. It takes a good 2 minutes of loosening the lint up and scraping it and bringing it out (blowing air doesn't work. You have to pick at it). But that HAD to be the problem. Granted, I just did it 10 minutes ago, so I'm not sure. But it hasn't popped up since.

(I know the charger is reversible) but try flipping it to the other side. That's what did the trick for me.

"(I know the charger is reversible) but try flipping it to the other side. That's what did the trick for me."

I had a problem with my first iPhone 6 where it stopped charging, I flipped the cable and it charged again for a while and then it stopped again. I looked carefully at the cable which was a genuine Apple cable that came with the phone, there was pitting and scorch marks along the contacts as if something had been arcing. Phone and cable replaced under warranty.

    Had the exact same problem.

That message juts kept on popping up at random.

Went on apple support site.  It told me to do an apple diagnostic via a link.  Did that and said I should take it into an apple shop for service or replacement.

    Made the appointment.

    Took it in.

The guy who serviced me did not seem to know what is going on.  I felt I was being interrogated, why this why that!  (another topic of discussion).

Anyway, after looking at the lighting port with a torch and saw nothing, he took my phone and showed it to his supervisor and he said they would change it for a new one.  I asked why, he said he did not know.
