Q: Why Won't iPhoto Export My Slideshow?

I import photos to iPhoto from my Canon Rebel. They were taken as RAW. I create a folder and name it within iPhoto. I place 50 images and order them the way I want. I then "Select All" the 50 photos in the folder just to play it safe. I click the Plus button and choose Slideshow. I go through all the steps, selecting the theme, selecting the Apple canned music (so that there won't be a copyright issue), I set my settings... Show Title, play music through slideshow, etc. I then click the Preview button. It works fine! I then tap the Play button. My slideshow fills the screen and does as I have asked it to. I then make sure that my slideshow is selected in the left column (it has not been unselected since I started this maneuver) and I click the Export button at the bottom of the window.  HERE IS WHERE, AS I SAID BEFORE, EXPORT DOES NOT WORK.... A dialog box comes up: "Export your slideshow Choose a format based on where you will view your slideshows;___Format:" (I have chosen all three choices many, many times trying to get beyond this point.)  "Automatically send slideshow to iTunes" has been selected, BTW.  I then hit the export button and the navigator dialog box opens and I choose my folder called iPhoto Slideshows. I click OK.  At this point the export progress dialog box opens and sits there... the thumbnail rectangle remains BLACK. The progress bar never changes from its standard GREY.  The only text on the export slideshow dialog box remains the same and says: "Exporting Slideshow ..."  Fearing there was a hiccup somewhere, I have left this window open and able to work OVERNIGHT, just in case. Nothing. I have tried all three formats. I have changed the destination folder. Nothing.

I have had this problem for months. Have asked this forum for help. I have been told nothing is wrong with iPhoto.

So here's my new question: "What am I suppose to do about this problem that I have explained above?"

I would say my copy of iPhoto is corrupt, if there is nothing wrong with iPhoto in general. Is this a possibility?  In which case.... How do I get another iPhoto app without having to pay for it?

Or do you have some other reason this process is not working on my Mac Pro with OS X  10.9.5 (13F34)?

This is the fifth time I have had to export all my photos to my laptop and use Snow Leopard with iPhoto 9.2.3 in order to finish my projects.

Please help with these EXPORT FAILURE questions.

Thank you, very much.

Maybe if you answered questions and quit posting incessantly you could get help - this is your third post tonight for the same problem

and Since in iPhoto it is not possible to have photos in a folder you are not giving accurate information

and you can alway reinstall iPhoto from the original source - no need to purchase again

Try selecting the photos and using the share button ==> slideshow - does that give a different result?

On reviewing the application again, the folders (my wrong word) that contain photos selected for specific projects within iPhoto are called "Albums" by iPhoto, not "folders." I am sorry. My mistake. Please exchange the word "Album" for the word "Folder" in my question, and maybe my inquiry will make sense to you.

I have tried selecting photos and using the Share button at the bottom of the window and selecting "Slideshow" from the popup menu (is that the right term?).  I have tried selecting the slideshow that has been completed and works as a review and a playback, and using the Menu Bar at the top of the display window to File > export > slideshow > Format: Standard Definition (480p) > Export > (select location) > OK.. I've used the Export button at the bottom of the Application Window. None of these work. The Progress window stays frozen: a black rectangle (for the thumbnail) and no blue progress in the grey progress bar.

If your answer is going to be: "Reinstall iPhoto." can we skip a step and will you please tell me, step-by-step how I am to do that using the App Store?

    To re-install iPhoto

    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)

    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.

For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:

2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.

2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type

    /var/db/receipts/

    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at

    /private/var/db/receipts

A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.

    3. Re-install.

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.

If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

    Do you have 3ivX installed?

    I don't know what 3ivX is, but I too am having the identical problems noted by Giddypuft.  I have a 17"MBP w/ OSX [10.9.5 (13F34)] & iPhoto 9.5.1

For years, I have routinely placed photos into albums then built a "Slideshow," which was then sent to iDVD to make a DVD. [The 'backward step' in iPhoto now seems to presume that no one needs DVDs anymore (WRONG) and thus 'eliminates' this as an option].  However, I too presumed that I could still "export" the finished slideshow [and, just as noted by Giddypuht, 'previews' and 'plays' beautifully in iPhoto, but will not "export" in any of the provided resolution options].  I too get the Export Process Dialogue box to open with the Grey "exporting" bar, but hours later, still no export. Is this an iPhoto 9.5 problem, an OSX problem?  Is there a work around?  I NEED to be able to build quick & easy DVDs from iPhoto.  iMovie is just too slow and cumbersome.  I'd REALLY appreciate any ideas or workarounds.  Thanks!

Just a wild thought but have you tried the fixes in the thread already?

3ivX is a popular video codec for mpeg4 videos, that will be installed by drivers for some Flip cameras or as part of Perian. It has been known to cause problems in combination with photo libraries, see this Apple support document:

Aperture 3: May be unresponsive or have slower performance with third-party video codec

    To uninstall the codec:

To remove the 3ivx plug-in, follow these steps:

    1. Go to the Finder
    2. From the Go menu choose Go to Folder.
    3. Type "/Library/QuickTime" and then click the Go button.
    4. Locate the "3ivxVideoCodec.component" file and drag it to your desktop. You may have to authenticate with your user account password before moving the file. Be sure you removed the file and did not just copy it from the QuickTime folder.

Thank you Léoni and Terence. Both of your answers were very helpful, without a hint of rudeness. I replaced the IPhoto app after tossing the corrupted version. the new download from the App Store indicated that there was a price of $14.99 (Disappointing, since I had already purchased IPhoto), however AFTER I clicked on the price tag to purchase another copy, an Apple dialog box popped up with a note saying I would not be charged. Relief. I am now able to export slideshows once again.

Terence:  Thanks a MILLION!! the step-by-step procedures given worked like a champ!  Like Giddypuht I too thought I'd have to 'pay' the $14.99, but as soon as I clicked it, was told there was no charge.  Slideshow is "exporting" as we speak.  MANY THANKS!
