Link redirect to file://

Hello all,

I've been searching the Internet for an answer to my question and I really can't seem to find one- at least one that I can understand. Recently I was on a website- clicked a file and was redirected to a 'file://' url that showed contents of my media folders.

I was using Firefox and I have a Mac OS X Version 10.6.8.

My question is; has my Mac been compromised? Did this website attempt to access my local files and drives and if so, could it have been successful?

I know I did not drag or somehow copy my file locations in the URL address bar (as I didn't even know that was a possibility).
