Yes, but under the heading #, instead of the letters of the alphabet.

I can't remember exactly but I think you create a phonetic version of each cyrillic name in Latin characters that will then sort with other Latin character names.
That will indeed, you're right. It's called transliteration.
So, guys - Contacts is unable to sort by cyrillic letters?

I would expect it work just fine if you run the system in Russian. But the two alphabets have different number of letters (33 and 26) and quite different order, so it's not clear how one would meld them.
