If you feel that Apple advertising regarding battery run time is a reflection of real world usage, that is not the case.  If you examine the criteria that they use, it is very conservative and it is not likely that one ever gets the advertised battery run time. If all you do is text edit, then you might get the 9 hours.  Open additional applications and the run time will contract.

In addition, the 'battery time' left is an unreliable estimate.  Measure the time you start a session and the charge level, and then look at the charge level and the length of time for the session and you will have a realistic gauge on battery run time.

Since you have brand new MBP, I suggest that you consider an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  Have the MBP examined just make certain that it operating the way it is supposed to.  Your MBP is under warranty.

    Ciao.

Within the system preferences, you can choose to select various settings that

can affect the power consumption of the portable computing device; so if you

are in a situation where you may not need a bright display, dim it. If you are

where you don't need to access the internet, turn off AirPort from the menubar.

There usually is a way to slow down the processor, if not automatic on battery

compared to when powered by AC magsafe adapter, to use less of the battery.

Support articles about batteries and portable devices that use them are available

to help manage the power sources of these items, including how to check the

AC power adapter, and other aspects of use. A new computer under AppleCare

or within the complementary warranty period, should be referred to Apple Store

where a genius, a product expert, or specialist is available to review the situation.

Or, an independent Apple Authorized Sales/Service Provider, if no genius bar.

    Good luck & happy computing!
