Microsoft word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience

After installing Mavericks, I get this same error box for each of the MS Office 2008 apps. "Microsoft [word,excel/etc] has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I've tried to open in a test user account and same thing happens. Any ideas? I don't really want to splurge for a new version. Thanks.

Thanks. Since the apps don't open or get beyond that error message, I went to the MS support page and downloaded the newest update I could find. During install, it wasn't able to select a disk. I realized I needed to start with an earlier update. So I went all the way back to the oldest update I could find,12.0.1. Installed it successfully and it appeared to want to open, but then the same error box appeared. I can't find my original install disks (I know, I know) to delete the suite and reinstall, so my question for you is this: Do you think if I download and install every update from oldest to newest, it's possible that it may get to the point that it will run in Mavericks?

I have same problem, however only with Microsoft Word (Excel, Powerpoint seem to be okay).

I'm using Microsoft Word version 14.4.4 and have OS x 10.9.5 installed. The problem arises a couple of minutes after first opening Word 2011 - It happens both during the creation of a new Word document and also when opening previously created Word documents.

Any suggestions?

Update (pun intended): After a major time suck to download and install 21 MS Office 2008 for Mac updates and 2 MS Office for Mac Service Packs, I got the same error message. Grrrr. And THEN I went and removed the "com.microsoft.office.plist" from the preferences folder, and the "com.microsoft.Office.prefs.plist" from the Microsoft folder within the preferences folder, and stuck them on my desktop. Still following? Then I restarted the computer and tried a Word doc and LOW and BEHOLD I am in business again! Thank you Old Toad for pointing me in the right direction, and you, too, Eric Root, for your 2¢.
