Q: Cannot disable Java (allow Java button missing?)

I recently installed Photoshop 5.1 on my MacBook Air (OSX Mavericks10.9.5). I got a Software update message: “to open Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 app, you need to install a Java SE 6 runtime. Would you like to install this?” I did the install and Photoshop started up fine. Unfortunately there is no possibility now to disable Java. There used to be a preference panel under earlier OS X versions, but this can no longer be found in Mavericks. Neither in the Utility folder nor in the System Preferences folder. Also the "disable Java" option in Safari > Preferences > Security is gone. (Not to be confused with "enable Javascript")

Apple has a support article on this: How to disable the Java web plug-in in Safari but it doesn't offer any solution at all, since my Safari>preferences>security panel doesn't have the " allow Java" button.

What it should look like according to the support article:

My security panel:

Screen Shot 2014-09-30 at 19.40.33.png

OSX 10.9.5 Safari 7.1

java version "1.6.0_65"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-462-11M4609)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-462, mixed mode

I only need Java for Photoshop otherwise I'd like to be able to disable it for security reasons.

Any suggestions?

Try clicking on the 'Manage Web Set Settings....' and add Java.

System Preferences, select the Java icon at the bottom.  It opens the Java Control Center.  Go to the Security tab and uncheck "Enable Java content in the browser"

Maybe the problem is with Java 6.  Here is what I have on my system:

Not sure if I can provide any other assistance.  Hopefully somebody else will have some insight.

    Hi,

For some reason your screendump picture won't load - neither in Safari, nor in Firefox (this is another issue though - I get an empty space with a question mark, hitting this triggers a "loading" bar, but nothing actually loads...) but I take it that your system preferences screendump differs from mine. Maybe the Java runtime version is the culprit, what's your version?

    Lowlander,

I don't know why you can't see the screen shot (it was a .png file, the screen shot I am including here is a .jpg file), but I did some looking because I got curious about your needing Java 6 for Photoshop CS5.1.

I have CS5.1 installed on my system which is running Mavericks (10.9.5) also.  I don't have Java 6 installed, but instead Java 7.  Photoshop works just fine for me.  But, I also found out some other information for you: (Take a look at the sections I outlined, you should be able to find the Java preferences in the Applications/Utility folder.

    Hi Silvergc,

I really appreciate your attempts to help me,

When I installed Photoshop 5.1 I simply accepted the (Software Update) offered Java 6 installation. I did some researching myself when I couldn't disable it, but the threads I found so far didn't offer a solution for my problem. Therefore I started this discussion. Contrary to what is stated in your sections there is no Java Preferences.app in my Utilities folder (or it must be invisible...?) I scanned all my libraries but there is nothing there either. I consider uninstalling the Apple version of Java and install v. 7 straight from Oracle. I really want to be able to disable Java.

Well, you could be right.  If it were me, at this stage I would remove Java altogether (but maybe move the directories instead of deleting them so that you can go back if something breaks).  Then I would install version 7 from the Java website.  Apple no longer provides Java with OS installations, so that is why Java 6 wasn't already there when you were doing the Photoshop update.

You should be able to find instructions for removing Java at the oracle java pages.
