iphone 4s ear speaker stopped working after ios8 update

Hello all,

I recently updated from 7.x to 8.0.0 and since then, the ear speaker wont work. I just updated to 8.0.2 with no difference.

Initially I was able to activate speaker phone and maintain a conversation. Recently when making a call I switch to speaker phone and now the mouthpiece doesnt work.

In summary:

Caller calls me I answer I talk and they can hear me but I cannot hear them. I switch to speaker phone and now I can hear them but they cant hear me.

Over bluetooth all is well.

Initially I assumed this was a bad ear speaker so I followed all the tips such as cleaning the headphone jack and pressing around the ear speaker, but now it seems to be software issue since I now have the microphone issue.

Anyone else have this issue? Iphone 4s

Thanks.

Hi gandc40

Before you go trying to roll back software or opening your device it would be prudent to check the dock connector. It may just need a clean.

At the home screen press the Volume up (or down) button and check whether you see just a grey icon with OR without the volume bars changing while pressing the buttons. If there are NO bars are visible it means that the iPhone thinks it's docked although it's not.

It's the way the iPhone detects accessories connected to the 30pin dock connector. It does this by measuring the electrical resistance from pin 21 to ground. See here: http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/A...

The threshold values seem to have been changed in recent ios updates. That is why the problem appears after the update.

The ad-hoc solution is to clean the dock connector. Be very careful doing this! I managed to clean my device with a very small screwdriver and being ever so gentle.

Just a follow up for anyone that has an issue with their iphone 4s receiver not working. I was able to fix this issue and I believe this to be software related. Here is what I did.

I opened up voice memo and created a new memo. I played the memo back and it played back over bottom speakers. I then replayed the voice memo but this time I clicked the blue speaker icon in the upper right hand corner and this changed the voice memo output to the ear piece speaker (aka the receiver). For some reason, this fixed my issue, I can now make phone calls as well as listen to voicemail the normal way and am no longer tethered to my vehicles bluetooth to make successful phone calls. Cheers!
