Q: HDMI output broken by 10.9.5 on my MBP Retina 2012

After installing 10.9.5 on my 2012 Retina MBP my HDMI output doesn't work!!

When i plug in the HDMI cable it detects the second display, and Display Preferences shows two monitors, but the screen remains empty.

If i sleep the MBP and wake-it up then output is displayed, but with serious visual artefacts. It also goes completely black every few seconds. Finally audio over HDMI also doesn't work anymore. Basically unusable.

I've been using this machine with HDMI output for two years without problems. It's a mid-2012 Retina MBP with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB.

I get the same result with different monitors and HDMI cables. I've reset the PRAM and SMC with no effect.

This rates high as an Apple ***.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB grap
