Q: HELP! Is my 'new' CPU failing me and causing KP's?

I hope I can make this as succinct as it needs to be. I have a MacPro 1,1, and have maxed out my RAM (2 ys ago) with 16GB Crucial RAM, and recently swapped my twin-dual-core processors for a pair of Xeon X5355's. I also had an issue where on of the wires on the lower Molex connector to the lower Super Drive arced, taking out both SD's. Rather than chase down that issue, I went to an external USB-connected SuperDrive. I'm also running OSX 10.6.8, and have run both Cocktail and Disk Utility to chase down an issue which has only just appeared.

The most recent 'mod' was swapping the CPU cores two weeks back, followed a week ago by adding the external Super Drive. Since that, when I've come back to my computer after a break, the computer is running, but the screens are dark and won't come back to life. I have to manually shut down and restart the system to get it running again. This has happened three times now; I ran both Cocktail and DU before the last Kernel Panic.

I'm no spark-chaser; I had an IT buddy of mine do the CPU swap for me, as I'm disabled anyway. From what I can understand, does the information below mean the cause of the KP's causing the "shutdown" described earlier is one or both of the CPU's? According to what I can read elsewhere, they're both operating just fine....I'm hoping it might just be something simple, like a firmware fix or something that one of a simple mind (moi) can wrap his elderly head around. (If it is the CPU's, I guess that's what happens with used CPUs...)

Anyway, if you can answer me here, I'd be more than grateful and indebted.

Sincerely

The Chuckster

Increasingly Disabled Vet (seriously)

Norman, OK

Replacing the CPU is always a risk, as Apple does not qualify Macs with other CPUs, and very few people do this themselves (little real world experience to draw on).

I would start by booting in Safe Mode to make sure there are no 3rd party products involved.

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>

However, looking at the panic, I'm wondering if it isn't an issue with the CPU vs the motherboard

"TLB invalidation IPI timeout: " "CPU(s) failed to respond to interrupts, unresponsive CPU bitmap

The TLB is the virtual memory Translation Look-aside Buffer, which is unlikely to be related to software or RAM.

Thanks to baltwo and to you, BobHarris.

I did get the two chips off ePray, with no way of knowing they were from another MP, so that could well be it I guess. It could also be the USB DVD recorder I've started using, but I'll try booting in Safe Mode and seeing if anything happens.

Um, how will I know this, anyway?  I'm 55, but you'd sometimes swear it's 5.5. All I wanted to do was get my MP as updated as I could get it to coax another few years out of it; without a solid fix, I'm kinda screwed...my disability isn't enough to cover either a new MP or repairs to my ole one. Crap.

Anyway, thanks again...I'll keep pushing on till something permanent happens, one way or the other.

    Sincerely,

    the chuckster

When booted in "Safe Mode" all kernel software caches will be cleared, and when the Mac boots will will NOT load any 3rd party software.  So Safe Mode will eliminate any possibility 3rd party software is at fault.  I can suspect it is hardware all I want, but testing is better.

Unless you are going to be doing some serious number crunching (such as video rendering), you would bet a much better "Bang for your Buck" replacing the hard disk with an SSD, or replacing the DVD with an SSD (MacSales.com DataDoubler kit).

Chances are your CPU is going to be idle most of the time, and when you are doing something, it is most likely going to be waiting for the disk.

This is getting confusinger and confusinger...I've had to reset my password 3 times and "like" the answer to reply...that doesn't seem right. Oh, well. An update:

In an effort to isolate the problem without SB, I looked through my Preferences and noticed my discs turned off after several hours. I set all controls to 'never'. Also (and just to complicate things), I suspended my ongoing DVD recordings overnight; I figured between the two, one of them would trigger it.

No problems this morning! I'm thinking the KP occurred when the discs shut down (and therefore wouldn't re-awake when I moved the mouse or hit a key). The only other possibility I can wrap my head around is the DVD recorder is taking so long (Toast 10 Titanium) that it might've triggered the KP, as I'd routinely leave the computer while it was burning a disc (I do a lot of this for my wife's classes - she's a high school & college teacher). Next I will try to burn a disk and see if nothing happens---surely, the fault must lie between the two, no?

Heck, the only other solution is to sacrifice my Petroliana collection or my '68 Impala (no motor) in order to buy a new MP....which I don't WANT to do.... Anyway, thanks for helping walk me though this...I'll most definitely keep y'all updated as and when anything new happens.

    Cheers,

    Cheers, BobHarris & baltwo,

I'm already knocking on wood, but I think the problem was in the discs' power-saving routine. It was set to put 'em to sleep after 3 hrs inactivity (I thought I'd set 'never' for all of 'em). Once I nixed the power-saving scheme, I've been running two full days at full-tilt without a hiccup. Maybe....?

ALSO, while I have you all: Besides thanking you profusely for walking me through this and allowing me to whine (even sans cheese!), another question: The Memorex USB DVD burner I referenced earlier (naturally) takes FOR-EVER to burn a disc in the time the now-defunct internal units used to. Can you think of a work-around that doesn't involve buying another computer (or the associated costs)? Perhaps hooking up a 'home' DVD recorder to the MP? (and how?) If not that, what about using a smaller computer networked to my MP I could  use just for burning discs?

    Thanks SO much again!
