Just Updated to 10.9.5 Now iPhoto 8.1.2 Won't Open-Microsoft Word & Excel Won't Open

I have a MacBook Pro now running 10.9.5

I updated last night to the 10.9.5 version and after doing so my iLife applications stop working: iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand

My Microsoft Word and Excel stop working as well.

Every time i try to open these applications i get error and they just won't open.

" iPhoto quit unexpectedly wile using the iPhoto plug-in"

I get this same message for all my applications.

I tried getting help from Apple and all they really told me was that I may need to update to my iPhoto by paying $15 bucks.

I'm upset that my applications have all failed me only after updating to new 10.9.5

This update was done at 10:30PM, all day my Microsoft Apps and iPhoto app were working fine and now I'm out of luck?

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks. It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:

Note 1: every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.

Note 2: If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1

As for MS Office - Office 2008 or later is required in order to run on Mavericks.

Once he rand this combo update, all my apps started to work...

I was running MS 2011 and that is also working now....

Apparently something did not properly install during the OS X update to 10.9.5 and this combo updater took care of it....

Thank you!

I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5 and have iPhoto 8.1.2. If I want to upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.latest version, I noticed that the only iPhoto on the App store is 9.6. Likewise I can't seem to find iLife '11 on the App Store either. If I were to buy a disc copy of iLife '11 from Amazon, and install iPhoto from there, will I be able to update it to the last 9.5.X version?

HI OT

I have a number of iPhoto issues (e.g. lost faces icons), iMac crashes (due, SMART utility is telling me a failing hard drive) and I had hard drive capacity issues. I will replace the iMac hard drive as I now know which larger capacity will fit and how to do it. In the meantime, by re-locating my iPhoto library to an external hard drive I broke the links to iMovie '09 and I cannot see that they're are able to be re-pointed to where the iPhoto library now resides. I did not appreciate the difference between movie files imported to iMovie, from say a video camera, and movie files in iPhoto imported, say from an iPhone. I've also only learnt now of consolidate! Although still images are ok, .avi files in movies from iPhoto are looking for an 'Originals' folder which, of course, no longer exists in iPhoto 9.5.1. I thought I could re-install and earlier version of iPhoto (with an 'Originals' folder so the path is as expected) directly on my iMac in /users/me/pitcures etc which is where the movie projects are looking, but you seem to suggest I can't.

If I can't install a version of iPhoto with an 'Originals' folder and I can't re-point .avi files in iMovie to the current location, is there a soltuion that doesn't involve re-editing a lot of great movies?

You would not believe the number of back ups and external drives I have but still missed the distinction between movies in iMovie as opposed to iPhoto, the implications of moving an iPhoto library on iMovie and the advantages of consolidation!!

y re-locating my iPhoto library to an external hard drive I broke the links to iMovie '09 and I cannot see that they're are able to be re-pointed to where the iPhoto library now resides

Try this: move the following preference files from your Home/Library/Preferences folder to the Desktop.

com.apple.iApps.plist

com.apple.iphoto.plist

com.apple.imovie.plist

Reboot and launch in this order: iPhoto and then iMovie. See if that will point iMovie to the new library location on the EHD.

If there's no change you can replace the iPhoto and iMovie preference file if there's a problem with those apps.

After I upgraded to 10.9.5 iPhoto 08 drew in pictures and photos, even a Numbers file, artwork from different file locations on my computer. I only want iPhoto to display iPhone pix I take. Is there a way to consolidate all these haphazard images? How to render order out of this chaos? Do upgrade patch for 10.9.5 or is it a manual re-sort and re-file?

Are you still running iPhoto 7 (08) with 10.9.5? It's been so long since I've run that version I don';t remember if it had the smart album option to display just photos from an specific camera. iPhoto 9.6.1 has this option that you can try if it's available with iPhoto 7.

The drop down menu will offer every camera that has a picture in the library:

Or you can fine all of the photos that are not from that camera:

NOTE: If you're considering upgrading to Yosemite at any time you should do it before 9/30 of this month because that's when El Capitan is released and Yosemite may not be offered after that. At that time you'll have to migrate your photos to the Photos library since you don't have any version of iPhoto 9.X which is necessary in order to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 which will work with Yosemite and El Capitan.

Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. I have been trying to fix the Generating Thumbnails problem for so long. I followed all the suggestions of removing the iMovies plist files and removing movie clips from the events folder. But, nothing was working. Then i followed the step by step instructions that you gave and removed the additional plist files that you have mentioned and now i have all the iPhoto videos available! Yipppeee
